Ch. 10 Vocabulary Words

Patent

Definition: A document that gives an inventor the sole legal right to an invention for a period of time. Own Words: A document document stating the inventors right to their invention. Sentence: A patent gives an inventor ownership of their invention.

Cotton Gin

Definition: A machine that removed seeds from cotton fiber. Own Words: A device that separated the seed and the cotton. Sentence: The cotton gin made slavery a good investment again.

Turnpike

Definition: A road that one must pay to use; the money is used to pay for the road. Own Words: A toll road. Sentence: Private business made turnpikes.

Canal

Definition: An artificial waterway. Own Words: A man-made waterway. Sentence: The Erie Canal was once the most important economic aspect of America.

Capitalism

Definition: An economic system based on private property and free enterprise. Own Words: An economy that operates on free enterprise and private property Sentence: Today, America still is based on capitalism.

Internal Improvements

Definition: Federal projects, such as canals and roads, to develop the nation's transportation system. Own Words: Federal projects to improve the nation's system of transportation. Sentence: In the 1800s, different regions disagreed on how much internal improvement was needed.

Lock

Definition: In a canal, an enclosure with gates at each end used in raising or lowering boats as they pass from level to level. Own Words: A device to raise and lower a boat on a canal. Sentence: Locks made it easy to go up and down a canal.

Sectionalism

Definition: Loyalty to a region. Own Words: When someone is feels loyalty to their region. Sentence: Sectionalism is one of the causes of the Civil War.

Capital

Definition: Money for investment. Own Words: Money intended to be used for investing. Sentence: Individual put their capital into a business in the hope of making more money.

Census

Definition: Official count of a population. Own Words: When the population is counted. Sentence: The first census of the United States in 1790 revealed a population of nearly four million.

American System

Definition: Policies devised by Henry Clay to stimulate the growth of industry. Own Words: Henry Clay's policies developed in order to stimulate the growth of industry. Sentence: The American System included a protective tariff.

Disarmament

Definition: Removal of weapons. Own Words: When weapons are removed. Sentence: The Rush-Bagot Treaty called for the disarmament along the boarder of the United States and British Canada.

Factory System

Definition: System bringing manufacturing steps together in one place to increase efficiency. Own Words: When factories are put into place to decrease the amount of time needed. Sentence: Lowell's mill created the factory system.

Technology

Definition: The application of scientific discoveries to practical use. Own Words: When scientific discoveries are used practically. Sentence: Technology has evolved to include inventions such as computers.

Industrial Revolution

Definition: The change from an agrarian society to one based on industry which began in Great Britain and spread to the United States around 1800. Own Words: A time in America when society changed from farming industry. Sentence: Factories are a product of the Industrial Revolution.

Free Enterprise

Definition: The freedom of private businesses to operate competitively for profit with minimal government regulation. Own Words: The right a small business has to operate with little approval of the government. Sentence: Free enterprise is an essential part of capitalism.

Demilitarize

Definition: To remove armed forces from an area. Own Words: When armed forces are removed from an area. Sentence: The Convention of 1818 created a secure, demilitarized boarder.

Court-Martial

Definition: To try by a military court Own Words: When someone is tried by a military court. Sentence: At one point, it was called for General Jackson and his officers to be court-martialed for going beyond their orders.

Interchangeable Parts

Definition: Uniform pieces that can be made in large quantities to replace other identical parts. Own Words: Parts that are identical and can be replace with other identical parts. Sentence: Most guns today have interchangeable parts.
