Battle of Peterloo

(1819) This battle, occurred in Manchester, England. It was more of a massacre than a battle; people had gathered to discuss political reform and spread new ideas, and were killed by government troops.

Carlsbad Decrees

1819, it discouraged liberal teachings in southern Germany. Censorship imposed by Metternich.

Great Famine

Beginning in 1845, a severe blight struck the European potato crop. in Ireland, the results were devastating and millions died, with even more immigrating to Canada and the United States. The event is also so called the Potato Famine.

Parasites

Count Henri de Saint- Simon believed the key to progress was proper social organization. It required the parasites- the court, the aristocracy, lawyers, and churchmen

Corn Laws

Passed in 1815 by the Tory party, the corn laws restricted foreign grain imports. During the wars with France the British had been unable to import cheap grain from eastern Europe. Agricultural prices had skyrocketed, and the landed aristocracy had received higher rents. Fearing peace would bring imports and lower prices for wheat, the aristocracy rammed the Corn laws through parliament. This was a very selfish legislation for the aristocracy's own advantage. The law lead to protests and demonstrations by urban laborers, supported by radical intellectuals. Eventually in 1846, when much of the working class allied with the middle class, the Corn laws were repealed in 1846. Their elimination was Britain's first steep towards free trade.
