What is Daoism?

Based on teachings of Lao Zi-Humans should see themselves a part of nature. People should live a simple life in harmony with nature. Harmony comes from balancing opposite forces of nature called yin and yang.

What is Confucianism?

Based on the teaching of Confucius, focused on proper conduct, respect for elders, education and hard work. Confucius taught that life would be harmonious if everyone was loyal, courteous, honest and faithful. Children show respect for authority-Rulers need to live by strong virtues and set a good example for society to be harmonious.

What is Legalism?

Based on the teachings of Han Fei. Believed people were evil and selfish by nature. The only way to acheive a strong society was to create laws with clear punishments and rewards.

What is Buddhism?

Based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, later known as the Buddha. Taught life was filled with suffering. Release from suffering came from understanding the four noble truth and live according to the eight fold path.

What are the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism?

First Noble Truth: Life is filled with suffering and disastisfaction. Second Noble Truth: Much of the suffering and disatisfaction is the result of selfish desires. Third Noble Truth: Much suffering will be reduced if people can reduce their selfish desires. Fourth Noble Truth: To live a good life and reach enlightenment, you must follow the eight fold path. (rules for living a ethical and compassionate life)

When a sage governs a state, he does not rely on the people to do good out of their own will. Instead, he sees to it that they are not allowed to do what is not good. If he relies on people to do good out of their own will, within the borders of the state not even ten persons can be counted on to do good.
