(1) Nuclear family: is a household consisting of a husband and wife and children (2) extended family: is a household consisting of a nuclear family plus an additional relative (ex: grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc) (3) monogamy: Is the practice of being married to one person at a time (4) Polygamy: is the practice of having more than one spouse at a time

What are the 3 types of commitment that make a marriage work (according to Johnson et. Al)?

(1) personal: a desire to stay married based on love and marital satisfaction: "I want to stay married" (2) Moral: a feeling to stay married based on moral attitudes: "i should stay married" (3) structural: A feeling of constraint based on alternatives , social pressures: "i have to stay married"

Reasons for the high rate of divorce

- Residential mobility of the nuclear family -ongoing re-definition of family and gender - ease of filing for divorce - longevity -Social acceptance

Divorce affect on children

As a child you learned from watching your parents and if they get along But still get divorced you may lose confidence in marriage as an institution. Children who witness high levels of conflict between their parents on the other hand are more likely to blame them on the marriages failure leaving room for the possibility that their own marriage will be different

Is a major factor to interpersonal attraction- we tend to interact, court, and marry people who live near us

Exogamy

Is the practice of marrying someone from a different social group (ex: more and more people are marrying outside of their race/ethnic group)

Endogamy

Is the practice of marrying within your social group(ex: marry within the same race)

Homogamy

the tendency of people with similar characteristics to marry one another (ex: values, beliefs, shared culture increases the chance of getting married)
