This treaty was signed after the Battle of Yorktown and it states that Great Britain recognizes the United States as an independent country.

Took place on Breed's Hill; Patriots loss: proved they could battle the Redcoats. Loss of British troops was double than patriots.

Valley Forge

a camp where soldiers in the Continental Army stayed for 6 months. The winter was very harsh in this camp and many died from disease and hunger; no battle was actually fought there.

a gathering of colonial leaders who were deeply troubled about the relationship between Great Britain and its colonies in America. Met in PHILADELPHIA.

a professional soldier hired to serve in a foreign army.

Patriots

another name for a colonist who violently rebelled against British control during the American Revolution and in July 1776 declared the United States of America an independent nation. They were loyal to the colonies.

Battle of Trenton/Princeton

colonist won this Battle; it was a surprise attack and no one died on the colonist side.

African Americans in the war

did not have rights;many compared life attached to Britain as to being enslaved. Many white leaders owned slaves. They could not fight in war.

Declaration of Independence

formally announced the colonies break from Great Britain. Many signed the document even though it was treason. July 4, 1776 United States is born.

Redcoats

is a historical term used to refer to soldiers of the British Army because of the red uniforms formerly worn by the majority of regiments.

"Common Sense"

is a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in 1775-76 that inspired people in the Thirteen Colonies to declare and fight for independence from Great Britain in the summer of 1776.

The Crisis

is a series of 13 pamphlets and publications aimed at encouraging the American colonists to continue their opposition of British rule.

is one of most well known British generals from the Revolutionary War.

British Strengths

well-trained; large powerful navy;more supplies to help their troops.

Lafayette

young frenchman who volunteered to serve in the Continental Army without pay; rich and supplied the troops with clothing.
