What did Swedish settlers do in 1638?
- Founded colony of New Sweden to the south of New Netherland which included parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

- John Law a Scottish banker -started a company to build plantations and towns, brought in new settlers
What was this region called that France was claiming and who started it all?
- New France - Jacques Cartier explored St. Lawrence River in the 1500's and started trading partnership with the Huron people.
Why were the Dutch afraid of the Swedish settlers?
- afraid that New Sweden would enter the fur trade when the Algonquian and the Dutch had a strong fur trading relationship.
What did the Dutch also build and where was it located?
- built New Amsterdam after city Amsterdam in the Netherlands - built it next to a harbor where the Hudson River flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
What did the French merchants and their king want?
- merchants wanted wealth that came from the fur trade - king wanted to add to his country's power -pushed merchants to start colonies in North America (king)
Who were Pierre Le Moyne and his brother Jean Baptiste?
- reached northern coast of Gulf of Mexico -found mouth of Mississippi River -members of expedition built settlement along River. - faced same hardships as la Salle did
Who was Samuel Champlain and what did he accomplish?
- sent by group of merchants to build settlement - Champlain founded Quebec along St. Lawrence river. - was the first French settlement in North America.
What did the colonists do that killed almost all of the native Americans in the New Netherlnads?
- sent out an army that destroyed Native American villages all over New Netherland.
Why was the harbor a good place for trade?
- ships could sail down the Hudson to New Amsterdam to drop of their furs and to get supplies. Ships waited in harbor to carry furs to Europe.
What happens to the native Americas and the settlers and what did they do about it?
- started attacking each others' farms and villages because settlers were taking up to much land for farms.
Who lived with the Native Americans and what did they learn from them?
- the missionaried learned their languages - fur traders also learned their language and new ways of life.
What did settlers build to protect the colony form flood waters?
- they built levees or earthen walls to
Why were the fur traders not able to build long lasting settlements?
- they spent most of their time trapping and hunting.
Who set out to find the Mississippi River from the French?
-Fur trader Louis Joliet catholic missionary Jacques Marquette found Mississippi River with help from native Americans. River took them south so wasn't the northwest passage

-Quebec and Montreal -Quebec only had 60 people living there by 1625.
What was the native Americas' theory about the Dutch?
-believed that the land was for all people to use and that nobody could own the land. - thought that Dutch were paying them for the use of what was on the land.
Why were the English, the Dutch and the French fighting?
Because the English and the Dutch fought over the fur trade in New France.
What did plantation owners do when they needed more workers?
Bought enclaves African Americans to do the work
Who were allies?
Dutch and Englis with Iroquois/French were allies Huron people. - Fighting between groups destroyed Huron population and French fur trade.
Who traveled to the French settlement?
French catholic missionaries arrived in New France and wanted to convert Native Americans to the catholic religion.

It was called New Netherland and they built it along the Hudson River and in parts of what are now New Jersey and New York.

Laws that limited where Africans in Louisiana could live and what kind of work they could do.

Made New France royal colony so he wouldn't lose lands in America -sent explorers to find Mississippi River which is west of Quebec - hoped River would be northwest passage . Mississippi meaning father of waters.
Why did the French colony grow slowly?
Most French people not interested in living in North America.
Why didn't Louis and Jacquea go any further?
Native Americans told them that Europeans lived farther south. Fearing the European soldiers might be Spanish they returned.
Did New France fail to attract many people?
New France failed to attract many people like the rest of New France. In 1763 80,000 French colonists were living North America while 1,500,000 English colonists lived in North America.

New Orleans one of the colony's first towns.

Signed peace treaty and by them almost all Algonquian had been wiped out.
What were Spain, England, and France doing in North America in the 1600's?
Spain and England built colonies while the French claimed land in Canada and north -eastern United States.
Why were the Native American tribes the Iroquois and the Huron fighting with each other?
They both wanted to control land in present day Canada.
During that time what did the Dutch think they do?
They thought they bought Manhattan island from the Native Americans who were living there.
Why did the Dutch set up a colony?
To profit from the fur trades and the desire of fur was high. They traded with the native Americans adding to their supply of fur.
What did la Salle try to do?
started settlement near the mouth of the Mississippi River but hardships lead to disagreements. La Salle killed and settlement failed.
