Chapter 6 and 7 Management Information System
Wireless mesh
A form of communication that uses multiple WI-Fi access points to link a series of interconnected local area networks to form a wide area network capable of serving a large campus or an entire city
Ultra Wideband (UWB)
A form of short-range communications that employs extremely short electromagnetic pulses that are transmitted across a broad range of radio frequencies of several gigahertz
Zigbee
A form of wireless communications frequently used in security systems and heating and cooling control sysems
Wi-Fi
A medium range wireless telecommunications technology band owned by the Wi-Fi Alliance
Local Area Network (LAN)
A network that connects computer systems and devices within a small area, such as an office building, home, or several floors in a building.
broadband communications
A relative term but it generally means a telecommunications system that can transmit data very quickly
Networking protocol
A set of rules, algorithms, messages, and other mechanisms that enable software and hard ware in networked devices to communicate effectively
Wide Area Network (WAN)
A telecommunications network that connects large geographic regions
Metropolitan area network (MAN)
A telecommunications network that connects users and their computers in a geographical area that spans a campus or city
Near Field Communications (NFC)
A very short range wireless connectivity technology designed for consumer electronics, cell phones, and credit cards.
Bluetooth
A wireless communication specification that describes how devices can be interconnected over distances of 10- 30 feet at a rate of 2 Mbps
Centralized Processing
An approach to processing wherein all processing occurs in a single location or facility
Distributed Processing
An approach to processing wherein processing devices are placed at remote locations but are connected to each other via a network.
Decentralized Processing
An approach to processing wherein processing devices are placed at various remote locations
Telecommunications medium
Any materials substance that carries an electronic signal to support communications between a sending and a receiving device
Telecommunications
Refers to the electronic transmission of signals for communications by means such as telephone, radio, and television
Computer Network
The communications media, devices, and other software needed to connect two or more computer systems and other devices
Channel bandwidth
The rate at which data is exchanged, usually measured in bps
IP address
a 64- bit number that identifies a computer on the internet
Internet
a collection of interconnected networks, all freely exchanging information using common set of protocols
Cloud computing
a computing environment where software and storage are provided as an internet service and are accessed with a web browser
Extranet
a network based on web technologies that links selected resources of a company's intranet with its customers, suppliers, or other business partners.
Virtual private network (VPN)
a private network that uses public network to connect multiple remote locations
File transfer protocol (FTP)
a protocol that provides a file transfer process between a host and a remote computer and allows users to copy files from one computer to another
Digital subscriber line (DSL)
a telecommunications service that delivers high speed internet access to homes and small businesses over the existing phone lines of the local telephone network
Encryption key
a variable value that is applied to a set of unencrypted text to produce encrypted text or to decrypted text
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)
a way to communicate data from one company to another and from one application to another in standard format, permitting the recipient to perform a standard business transaction
Uniform resource locator (URL)
a web address that specifies the exact location of a web page using letters and words that map to an IP address and a location on the host
Quick response code
are two types of two-dimensional barcode that can be scanned by users with a smartphone camera
HTTP
hypertext transfer protocol
Simple object access protocol (SOAP)
is a specification that defines the XML format for messages
Web portal
is a web page that combines useful information and links and acts as an entry point to the web
Client/server architecture
multiple computer platforms are dedicated to special functions, such a s database management, printing, communications, and program execution
Web services description language (WSDL)
provides a way for a web service application to describe its interfaces in enough detail to allow a user to build a client application to talk to it
Extensible markup language (XML)
the markup language designed to transport and store data on the web
Tunneling
the process by which VPNs transfer information by encapsulating traffic in IP packets over the internet
Encryption
the process of converting an original message into a form that can be understood only by the intended receiver
Telecommuting
the use of computing devices and networks so that employees can work effectively away from the office
Web 2.0
the web as a computing platform that supports software applications and the sharing of information among others
Universal discover description and integration (UDDI)
used to register web service applications with an internet directory so that potential users can easily find them and carry out transactions over the web
