Chapter 7: Psychology
In this section, human memory is likened to computer memory and to a filing system. In what ways might human memory be unlike these things?
Humans lose or forget memories while a filing cabinet hold stuff
memory of facts, words, and concepts
semantic memory
Relating something you're learning to something you already know
Elaborative rehearsal
translation of information into a form which can be used and stored as memory
Encoding
What are the two types of explicit memory?
episodic and semantic
Memory of a specific event
episodic memory
Memory of specific information
explicit memory
locating stored information and returning it to conscious thought
retrieval
Explain why both episodic and semantic memories are classified as explicit.
Bc they are both memories that are clear or specific
How do organizational systems help the mind store memories? How do they help the mind retrieve memories?
Because the memories are organized and arranged for future use so you can have a better chance of finding them when needed
Memory where you're not consciously aware
Implicit memory
Repetition of information in order to not forget it
Maintenance rehearsal
Process which we recollect past experiences, information, and skills learned in the past
Memory
Memory retrieved because the mood that was originally encoded is recreated
State-dependent memories
