Chapter 9: Muscles and Naming
Name of muscle after their location
1) biceps- brachi and branchialis 2) quadriceps femoralis 3) orbicularis orbis 4) rectus abdominis 5) gluteus maximus 6) pectoralis major
Name of muscles named after their action
1) flexor carpi ulnaris- flexor- flexes the wrist 2) extensor digitorium- extends the fingers 3) adductor longus- adducts the thigh 4) pronator teres- pronates the front arm 5) erector spinae- erects the spine (action usually first in name)
Name of muscles after their size
Used to name muscles that are similar to each other- differentiated by size gluteus maximus, medias, and minimus rhomboid major and minor
Muscles named after the number of heads
if muscles have more than one proximal attachment point ex) tricep, bicep, quadricep
Name of muscle after their fiber orientation and what the names mean
rectus- fibers in a straight line oblique- run at an angle oriculares- circular transversus- sideways plane ex) orbicularis oris- circular muscle around the eye transversus abdominus
Name of muscles after their shape
rhomboid major and minor quadraceps deltoid (triangular) trapezius
How are skeletal muscles named?
size, shape, length, location, direction of muscle fiber, attachment, number of attachments, action
Muscles named after their attachments
the attachments are what bones or bone features the muscle is connected to. ex) tibilis anterior- tibia on anterior surface ex) sternohyphoid- sternum/hypohoid bone
