A chemical equation

A chemical equation is the chemist's way of writing a sentence about what happens in a chemical reaction. Charcoal burns in oxygen to produce carbon dioxide.

chemical reaction

A chemical reaction results in a change in the chemical identity of the substance or substances involved (ex. Baking a cake, digestion, burning charcoal).

decimal to percent

A decimal number can be converted to a percent by multiplying by 100 and adding a percent sign.

fraction to percent

A fraction can be converted to a percent by dividing the numerator by the denominator, multiplying by 100, and adding a percent sign.

physical change

A physical change results in a change in the form of matter, but its identity remains unchanged.

Sig Figs (Lab Only)

All nonzero digits are significant - 9.897 Zeros between non digits are significant - 1.002 Zeros at the beginning of a number are never significant - 0.02 Zeros at the end of a number that contains a decimal point are always significant - 2.000

metric unit conversion acronym

Kilo, Hecto, Deka, Meter, Deci, Centi, Milli. King henry drank (base) delicious chocolate milk (micro) (nano)

Matter categories and subcategories

Matter has 2 categories 1. Pure substance a) element b) compounds 2. Mixtures a) Homogeneous (uniform same throughout) b) Heterogeneous (not uniform throughout)

Addition and Subtraction

The answer is given to the same number of decimal places as the term with the fewest decimal places

sig fig rules for multiplication and division

The answer should have the same number of sig figs as there are in the number with the fewest sig figs

law of conservation of mass.

The number of each reactant element equals the number of each element in the products. This illustrates the law of conservation of mass. For any chemical equation, the number of each element or compound must be the same on both sides of the equation. We can balance chemical equations when necessary by adding a number, called a coefficient, in front of the chemical formula for a substance in the chemical equation.

zero is not signigicant if

at the beginning of a decimal number and end of a number that doesn't have a decimal point

Density (d)

d=m/V less dense object floats, can use density as conversion factor because it does not change

Solid

definite shape and volume - particles packed close

Periodic table- groups

groups vertical column bloacks

Gas

no definite shape or volume - particles are disordered and rapidly moving

Liquid

no definite shape, definite volume - particles are less ordered and move about freely
