Christian Denominations
Methodist
A Protestant denomination founded on the principles of John Wesley and Charles Wesley. Originally a movement with the Anglican Church but later became a separate denomination in America. Doctrine: Prevenient Grace: God gives people grace so that they are in position to choose him for themselves.
Non-Denominational
History: Non-Denominational became popular at the turn of the 21st century. More often then not, Non-Demoninational churches are closely aligned with baptist in teaching and practice Doctrine: Decision Theology: People are not spiritually dead, but have the capacity to choose God on their own.
Pentecostal
History: The Pentecostal movement began in L.A. at the Azusa Street Revival on April 14, 1906. During this meeting people began to speak in strange languages and attributed it to the work of the Holy Spirit Doctrine: Pentecostal believe in a second baptism of the spirit that imparts miraculous copulent
Seventh Day Adventist
History: founded by William Miller; who predicted the world would end in 1844; Was later reinterpret into the Seventh day Adventist faith. Doctrine: The Sabbath and Kosher Laws were still in effect for Jews and Gentiles alike
Presbyterian
History: A religion that began in Scotland and evolved from John Calvin in the sixteenth century is known as Presbyterrians. Doctrine: Limited Atonement - Jesus only died for the Elect. Once a person is saved, he cannot lose his salvation
Episcopalian
History: American version of Church of England under archbishop of Canterbury rather than Queen. Formed in the 16th century Doctrine: Women pastors are permitted. Universalism: the belief that god will save everyone regardless of their faith
Baptist
History: Historians credit the rise of the baptist Church to John Smith who left the Church of England Doctrine: Infants are not batpized, Immersion is the only valid way to baptize
Lutheran (LCMS)
History: Martin Luther was a Catholic Monk who sought to brong reform to the atholic church in the 16th century. Luther disagreed with the Catholic Practice of selling indulgences
Roman Catholic
History: Peter was the first pope and he passed his authority on to the Pope of Rome Doctrine: The pope has the same authority as the bible Mary has the power to answer prayer We cannot be absolutely certain that we are saved
Eastern Orthodox
History: The Church in the East separated from the Church in the West in 1054AD due to unresolved Doctrinal linguistics and political differences Doctrine: The teaching of the earliest Christians has the same authority as the Bible. Iconography - The use of artworks in the church service to worship god and Inspire transformation is very common in Eastern Orthodox churches
Lutheran ECLA
History: The evangelical Lutheran Church of America came together through the merging of three smaller Lutheran denomination in 1988 Doctrine: the bible contains errors and is not the word of god in its entirety
Salvation Army
History: a charitable and religious organization to evangelize and to care for the poor and homeless. Founded by William Booth, he developed new ways of reaching out to the homeless Doctrine: No sacrament is observed. Christian Perfection: the avoidance of all willful sin is something that can be achieved in this lifetime.
