Duplex Multimode LC Connectors

A smaller version of the fiber-optic SC connector. It is sometimes called a little or local connector and is quickly growing in popularity due to its smaller size.

LC Connectors

A smaller version of the fiber-optic SC connector. It is sometimes called a little or local connector and is quickly growing in popularity due to its smaller size.

Most common network media

UTP

Ethernet Straight-through

Both ends T568A or T568B

Rollover

Cisco Propietary

Attaches antennas to wireless devices - can be bundled with fiber-optic cabling for two way data transmission

Coaxial

Multimode Fiber -MMF

Consists of a larger core and uses LED emitters to send light pulses. Specifically, light from an LED enters the multimode fiber at different angles, as shown in Figure 2. Popular in LANs because they can be powered by low-cost LEDs. It provides bandwidth up to 10 Gb/s over link lengths of up to 550 meters.

SMF - Single Mode Fiber

Consists of a very small core and uses expensive laser technology to send a single ray of light, as shown in Figure 1. Popular in long-distance situations spanning hundreds of kilometers, such as those required in long haul telephony and cable TV applications.

Ethernet Crossover

One end T568A and other end T568B

SC Connectors

One of the first connector types used. The connector locks securely with a "twist-on/twist-off" bayonet style mechanism.

ST Connectors

One of the first connector types used. The connector locks securely with a "twist-on/twist-off" bayonet style mechanism.

Data Link Layer

Prepares network data for the physical network

Counters EMI and RFI by using shielding techniques and special Connectors

STP

The new Ethernet 10GB standard uses this form of copper media

STP

Logical Link Control (LLC)

This upper sublayer communicates with the network layer. It places information in the frame that identifies which network layer protocol is being used for the frame.

Terminates with BNC, N type and F type connectors

coaxial

Media Access Control (MAC)

his lower sublayer defines the media access processes performed by the hardware. It provides data link layer addressing and access to various network technologies.
