Read IT's about business case 8.7 Brazil Uses Smart Meters on p. 267. If smart meters are installed in large numbers, then what happens to the workers who are employed as meter readers? Do you see problems with this scenario?

The meter readers are then unemployed or laid off because the use of smart readers saves the company money by allowing them to employ less workers. Define, describe and distinguish the push model and the pull model for supply chain management.

The Push model, also known as the make-to-stock strategy, begins with a forecast, or educated guess for customer demand. The company then uses that forecast to determine how much to produce. The company then "pushes" those products to the customers. The problem with the push strategy is it is all based on a guess, and can often be incorrect and either under or over produce quantities. Whereas in the Pull model, or make-to-order model, the production process begins with the customer order. Therefore, companies make only what customers want, a process closely aligned with mass customization. The problem with the pull strategy is that it takes time for the product to reach the customer, which can make it hard to sell mass quantities of products.

What specific methods (or indicators) are you using? After accomplishing the lab (feasibility study), what would the steering committee do next? What would YOU do if it was your business? How would you proceed with systems development? JAD? RAD? Agile? Out-source? Off the shelf?

In Excel Lab 1 we created different scenarios for the company to use to determine budget, price, sales, and even profit margin changes. Our job was to combine all the information given into an excel spreadsheet to make an easy to use and manipulate for members of management. I believe Lab 1 would fall, not only under the structured IS support, but also the Structured Management Control areas on figure 12.2. My reasoning is that they both utilize financial forecasting and statistical models to show members of management the financial outcomes of the decisions. This allows members of management to make informed decisions based on factual evidence, while keeping in mind the business requirements and needs. I would proceed with using RAD which combines JAD prototyping and integrating computer-assisted software engineering tools for my business. This would be very useful in the development process for software used daily in the company. It creates it more efficiently and high quality which is also the goal to help the bottom line, keeping the business needs in mind.
