Continuous vs. Discrete Data
Discrete:
The values belonging to the set are distinct and separate (unconnected).
Continuous:
The values belonging to the set can take on ANY value within a finite or infinite interval.
Is continuous data connected or distinct?
Continuous data is connected.
Is continuous data measured or counted? Give three examples.
Continuous data is measured. Examples would include height, distance, speed, weight. The height of a sunflower includes all the heights it passed to reach its current height. The speed of a train includes all the speeds it could possible travel. The weight of a child includes all the weights he or she passed to reach the current weight.
Is discrete data measured or counted? Give three examples.
Discrete data is counted. A dice with six sides. The number of students enrolled in a class.
Is discrete data connected or distinct?
Discrete data is distinct and separate.
