desktop

1. A desktop is a term commonly used to describe a desktop computer or system unit. 2. When referring to an operating system or GUI, the Desktop is a system of organization of icons on a screen. The Microsoft Windows Desktop was first introduced with Microsoft Windows 95 and has been included with every version of Windows since then. Cursor

1. Alternatively referred to as a caret or a cursor, a text cursor is a visual representation of where the text is going to start when you begin typing. When referring to the mouse, a cursor describes an object (typically an arrow or pointing finger) that is used to point, click, drag, and drop items on a GUI operating system. maximize

Nearly all open windows in a graphical user interface (GUI) have resizing options. Maximize allows the user to enlarge a window, usually making it fill the entire screen or the program window in which it is contained. When a window is maximized, it cannot be moved until it is reduced in size using the Restore button. Often, you can get this effect by clicking the same button you used to maximize the window or by double-clicking the title bar.

email

Short for electronic mail, e-mail or email is information stored on a computer that is exchanged between two users over telecommunications. More plainly, e-mail is a message that may contain text, files, images, or other attachments sent through a network to a specified individual or group of individuals.

right click

Sometimes abbreviated as RMB (right mouse button), the right-click is the action of pressing down on the right mouse button. The right-click provides additional functionality to a computer's mouse, usually in the form of a drop-down menu containing additional options.

window

When referring to an operating system, Windows or win is an operating environment created by Microsoft that provides an interface, known as a Graphical User Interface (GUI), for computers. Windows eliminates the need to memorize commands for the command line (MS-DOS) by using a mouse to navigate through menus, dialog boxes, buttons, tabs, and icons. If you are using a PC (IBM) computer you are most likely using a version of Windows. If you are on an Apple computer you are using macOS.

1.Alternatively referred to as a video display terminal (VDT) and video display unit (VDU), a monitor is an output device that displays video images and text. A monitor is made up of circuitry, a screen, a power supply, buttons to adjust screen settings, and casing that holds all of these components. Like most early TVs, the first computer monitors were comprised of a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) and a fluorescent screen. Today, all monitors are created using flat panel display technology, usually backlit with LEDs. The image to the right shows an ASUS LCD monitor.

Keyboard

A computer keyboard is one of the primary input devices used with a computer that looks similar to those found on electric typewriters, but with some additional keys. Keyboards allow you to input letters, numbers, and other symbols into a computer that can serve as commands or be used to type text.

CPU

Alternately referred to as a processor, central processor, or microprocessor, the CPU (pronounced sea-pea-you) is the Central Processing Unit of the computer. A computer's CPU handles all instructions it receives from hardware and software running on the computer.

Minimize

Alternatively referred to as a collapse box, minimize box, and minimize button, minimize is an action in GUI operating systems to hide a window but keep the program running in the background.

link/hyperlink

Alternatively referred to as a link, a hyperlink is an icon, graphic, or text in a document that links to another file or object. The World Wide Web is comprised of hyperlinks linking trillions of pages and files to one another. For example, Computer Hope home page is a hyperlink to the main page of Computer Hope.

Space bar

Alternatively referred to as space and the space key, the spacebar or space bar is a long horizontal key on the lower edge of a keyboard that is always the largest and longest key on the keyboard. When the spacebar key is pressed it creates an empty space, also known as a space character or whitespace that helps separate words and other characters in a sentences. For example, if there were not spaces in this paragraph all of the text would be together and be very difficult to read.

Internet

Alternatively referred to as the net or web, the Internet was initially developed to aid in the progress of computing technology by linking all the best academic computer centers. The Internet as we know it today first started being developed in the late 1960's with the start of ARPANET and transmitted its first message on Friday, October 29, 1969. In 1993, the Internet experienced one of its largest growths to date and today is accessible by people all over the world.

icon

An icon is a small graphical representation of a program or file. When you double-click an icon, the associated file or program will be opened. For example, if you were to double-click on the My Computer icon, it would open Windows Explorer. Icons are a component of most GUI operating systems, including Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS X. Icons help users quickly identify the type of file represented by the icon. The image to the right is an example of "My Computer" icons in different versions of Microsoft Windows.
