Cranial Nerves
Cranial Nerve VI is?
Abducens
Type: Sensory. This nerve sends smell impulses from the nasal mucous membrane to the brain.
Cranial Nerve I, Olfactory
Type: Sensory. This nerve sends visual impulses from the eye to the brain.
Cranial Nerve II, Optic
Type: Motor. This nerve controls eye muscle movements for interior lateral, medial, superior. This nerve constricts eye pupils and elevates eye lids.
Cranial Nerve III, Oculomotor
Type: Motor. This nerve controls inferomedial eye movement.
Cranial Nerve IV, Trochlear
Type: Sensory/Motor. This nerve contains sensory fibers for taste on posterior third of tongue as well as sensory fibers of the pharynx that result for gag reflex; in addition, this nerve provides secretory fibers to the parotid salivary glands and promotes swallowing.
Cranial Nerve IX, Glossopharyngeal
Type: Sensory/Motor. This Nerve sends sensory impulses of pain, touch and temperature from the face to the brain; in addition, this nerve also enable clenching and movement of the lateral jaw for biting and chewing.
Cranial Nerve V, Trigeminal
Type: Motor. This nerve controls lateral eye movement
Cranial Nerve VI, Abducens
Type: Sensory/Motor. This nerve contains sensory fibers for taste on anterior 2/3 of tongue, stimulates secretion of salivary glands and tears for the lacrimal glands; in addition, this nerve supplies facial muscles and affects facial expressions.
Cranial Nerve VII, Facial
Type: Sensory. This nerve contains sensory fibers for hearing and balance.
Cranial Nerve VIII, Vestibulocochlear
Type: Motor. This nerve innervates tongue muscles that promote the movement of food and talking.
Cranial Nerve X, Hypoglossal
Type: Sensory/Motor. This nerve carries sensations from the throat, larynx, heart, lungs, bronchi, gastrointestinal tract, and abdominal viscera. Promotes swallowing, talking, and production of digestive juices.
Cranial Nerve X, Vagus
Type: Motor. This nerve innervates neck muscles promoting movement of the shoulder and head rotation. Also promotes movement of the larynx.
