CSA W47.1 Test Conditions

-Must consist of a fillet weld, groove plus fillet welds or other types of welds as applicable, executed with the applicable welding process in qualifying positions. -Vertical shall normally be vertical up. -SMAW uses F number designations: F1 = EXX15, EXX16, EXX18 -qualifies F1 F2 = EXX10, EXX11 -qualifies F1, F2 F3 = EXX12, EXX13, EXX14 -qualifies F1, F2, F3 F4 = EXX22, EXX24, EXX27, EXX28 -qualifies F1, F2, F3, F4 -Tests must be witnessed and evaluated by the CWB.

CSA W47.1 Test Methods

-Radiographic examinations may be used at the discretion of the company for all processes except semi-automatic GMAW, in which only bend tests may be used. -Surface discontinuities shall not exceed: a) 3 mm (1/8 in) measured in any direction b) 6mm (1/4 in) on the corners, unless the corner crack resulted in visible slag inclusions or other fusion type discontinuities, in which case (a) shall apply. -The sum of all discontinuities >1 mm but < or = 3mm (1/8 in) shall not exceed 10 mm (3/8 in).

CSA W47.1 Performance Qualification Testing Requirements

-Welding personnel shall be permitted to weld only in the classification, class, thickness range and process in which they are qualified. -A successful test results in an I.D. card according to classification, process and mode of application. *When a welder's ability is questioned they shall have their qualification suspended immediately until they pass a test check to be recertified.

CSA W47.1 Operator Class and Position of Welding

Class F - Flat: capable of welding in the flat position and able to make fillet welds in the horizontal position. Class H - Horizontal: capable of welding in the flat and horizontal positions. Class V - Vertical: capable of welding in the flat, horizontal and vertical positions. Class O - Overhead: capable of welding in the flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions.

CSA W47.1 Scope

Governs the certification of companies and the capability of the company with respects to welding. Does not supersede other codes or standards.

CSA W47.1 Modes of Process Application

Manual Welding Semi-Automatic Welding Machine Welding and Automatic

CSA W47.1 Classification "ASW"

Refers to a welder's ability to deposit Arc Spot Welds.

CSA W47.1 Classification "WT"

Refers to a welder's ability to deposit tack welds.

CSA W47.1 Classification "FW"

Refers to a welder/operator's ability to deposit fillet welds and tack welds.

CSA W47.1 Classification "T"

Refers to a welder/operator's ability to perform a weld from 1 side without backing and achieve complete penetration in the root pass, hollow section, pipe and plate. *This classification also qualifies for the S, FW, and WT classifications in the same process, class and mode.

CSA W47.1 Classification "S"

Refers to a welder/operator's ability to weld plates and rolled or hollow sections for the full thickness of material, when welding from both sides with back gouging, or when welding from one side with backing.

CSA W47.1 Processes

SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) FCAW (Flux Core Arc Welding) GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) SAW (Submerged Arc Welding) GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) ESW (Electro Slag Welding) EGW (Electro Gas Welding) Each process requires its own qualification. *Separate qualification tests are required if the mode of transfer changes to ensure the welder is capable of using GMAW in various modes without issue.

CSA W47.1 Period of Effectiveness

Shall remain in affect for 2 years unless there is a specific reason to question their ability.

CSA W47.1 Jurisdiction

Steel Buildings, Bridges, Cranes, Lifts, Elevators, Bleachers, Mezzanines, Railings and Handrails. *CAN 3-S16.1

CSA W47.1 Administration

The Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) has the responsibility of administering the standard.

CSA W47.1

The Certification of Companies for Fusion Welding of Steel Structures

CSA W47.1 Areas of Interest to Welders

The company must submit, at the time intervals and to the extent required by the bureau, a report showing: -the name of each tack welder, welder and welding operator; -the process and welding position upon which each may be engaged; -the expiry date of qualification; and qualifying authority, if other than the bureau.
