Dangerous Goods Forbidden Unless Exempted

Certain other dangerous goods are considered to be too dangerous for transport by air in the normal course of events. However, fexceptional circumstances, and under an exemption granted by the States concerned, these dangerous goods may be carried provided that the details of the government exemption are complied with their entirely

Recognize the Problem (signs & symptoms) Maintain a calm, efficient attitude - be careful not to alarm passengers Obtain information and provide full description of the item to the captain Await instructions from the Flight crew If on the ground, confiscate hazardous article and remove it from the aircraft prior to closing the door If inflight, place and secure article in a safe container (box, plastic bag, etc.) If possible, relocate passengers away from the hazard-causing agent In case of fire, extinguish it using the appropriate fire extinguisher

UN Number

The four digit number assigned by the United Nations Committee of Experts on the transport of dangerous goods to identify a substance or a particular group of substances.

Pilot-in-command

The pilot designated by the operator, or in the case of general aviation, the owner, as being in command and charged with the safe conduct of a flight

United Nations Subcommittee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods

This classification determines the acceptability of an articles and substances for air transport as well as the conditions for their transport

Cylinders

Which among the "Hidden Dangerous Goods" is this? Indicates compressed or liquefied gases.

Cryogenic (Liquid)

Which among the "Hidden Dangerous Goods" is this? Indicates refrigerated liquefied gases such as argon, helium, neon and nitrogen

Consolidated Consignments (Groupages)

Which among the "Hidden Dangerous Goods" is this? May contain any of the defined classes of dangerous goods.

Diving Equipment

Which among the "Hidden Dangerous Goods" is this? May contain cylinders (such as scuba tanks, vest bottles, etc.) of compressed gas (air, oxygen, etc), high intensity diving lamps which can generate extremely high heat when operated in air. In order to be carried safely, the bulb or battery must be disconnected

May contain explosives (flares or other pyrotechnics), chemical oxygen generators, unserviceable tyre assemblies, cylinders of compressed gas (oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen or fire extinguishers), paint, adhesives, aerosols, life-saving appliances, first aid kits, fuel in equipment, wet or lithium batteries, matches, etc.

Drilling or Mining Equipment

Which among the "Hidden Dangerous Goods" is this? May contain explosives and/or other dangerous goods.

Automobiles, parts (car, motor, motorcycle)

Which among the "Hidden Dangerous Goods" is this? May contain ferro-magnetic material which may not meet the definition for magnetized material, but which may be subject to special stowage requirements due to the possibility of affecting aircraft instruments (see 3.9.2.2). May also contain engines, carburetors or fuel tanks which contain or have contained fuel, wet batteries, compressed gases in tyre inflation devices, fire extinguishers, shocks/struts with nitrogen, air bag inflators/air bag modules, etc

Camping/Expeditionary Equipment

Which among the "Hidden Dangerous Goods" is this? May contain flammable gases (butane, propane, etc.), flammable liquids (kerosene, gasoline, etc.), flammable solids (hexamine, matches, etc.) or other dangerous goods

Dental Apparatus

Which among the "Hidden Dangerous Goods" is this? May contain flammable resins or solvents, compressed or liquefied gas, mercury and radioactive material.

Dry Shipper (Vapour Shipper)

Which among the "Hidden Dangerous Goods" is this? May contain free liquid nitrogen. Dry shippers are subject to the Regulations when they permit the release of any free liquid nitrogen irrespective of the orientation of the package.

Chemicals

Which among the "Hidden Dangerous Goods" is this? May contain items meeting any of the criteria for dangerous goods, particularly flammable liquids, flammable solids, oxidizers, organic peroxides, toxic or corrosive substances.

COMAT (Company Materials)

Flight crew member

a license crewmember charged with duties essential to the operation of an aircraft during a flight duty period

Crew member

a person assigned by an operator to duty on an aircraft during a flight duty period

Operator

a person, organization, or enterprise engaged in or offering to engage in an aircraft operation

Exception

a provision in this chapter which excludes a specific item of dangerous goods from the requirements normally applicable to that item

Consumer Goods

aerosols, alcoholic beverages, perfumes, colognes, safety matches, and liquefied gas lighters carried aboard an aircraft by the operator for use or sale on the aircraft during flights or series of flights but excluding non-refillable gas lighters and those lighters liable to leak when exposed to reduced pressure

Passenger aircraft

an aircraft that carries any person other than a crew member, an operator's employee in an official capacity, an authorized representative of an appropriate national authority or a person accompanying a consignment or other cargo

Exemption

an authorization issued by an appropriate national authority providing relief from the provisions of this chapter

Serious injury

an injury which sustained by a person in an accident and which: i. requires hospitalization for more than 48 hours, commencing within seven days from the date the injury was received ii. results in a fracture of any bone iii. involves lacerations which cause severe hemorrhage, nerve, muscle or tendon damage; or iv. involves injury to any internal organ; or v. involves second or third-degree burns, or any burns affecting more than 5% of the body surface; or vi. involves verified exposure to infectious substances or injurious radiation

Dangerous goods accident

an occurrence associated with an related to the transport of dangerous goods by air which results in fatal or serious injury to a person or major property damage

Dangerous goods incident

an occurrence, other than a dangerous goods accident, associated with and related to the transport of dangerous goods by air, not necessarily occurring on board an aircraft, which results in injury to a person, property damage, fire, breakage, spillage, leakage of fluid or radiation or other evidence that the integrity of the packaging has not been maintained. Any occurrence relating to the transport of dangerous goods which seriously jeopardizes the aircraft or its occupants is also deemed to constitute a dangerous goods incident

Cargo aircraft

any aircraft, other than a passenger aircraft, which is carrying goods or property

Marking

any article of substance carried as dangerous goods must be properly packed, identified, classified, marked labelled and identified

Forbidden Dangerous Goods

any article or substance which, as presented for transport, is liable to explode, dangerously react, produce a flame or dangerous evolution of heat or dangerous emission of toxic, corrosive or flammable gases or vapors under conditions normally encountered in transport must not be carried on aircraft under any circumstances

Miscellaneous

any substance, which presents a danger during air transport that, is not covered by other classes

Unit Load Device

any type of freight container, aircraft container, aircraft pallet with a net, or aircraft pallet with a net over an igloo

Handling labels

are used to provide information on the proper handling and stowage of packages of dangerous goods

aircraft equipment

articles and substances which would otherwise be classified as dangerous goods but which are required to be aboard the aircraft in accordance with pertinent airworthiness requirements and operating regulations or that are authorized by the CAAP to meet special requirements

Toxic and Infectious Substances

causes infectious and poisonous damage to human biological components when inhaled, swallowed &/or absorbed through the skin. Substances which are known or reasonably expected to contain pathogens and cause disease in humans or in animals.

describing dangerous goods which, if mixed, would be liable to cause a dangerous evolution of heat or gas or produce a corrosive substance

Battery-Powered Electronic Equipment

electronic devices such as electronic flight bags, personal entertainment devices, credit card readers, containing lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries and spare lithium batteries for such devices carried aboard an aircraft by the operator for use on the aircraft during the flight or series of flights

special provisions have been made for the transport of very small quantities of dangerous goods, as cargo, which except them from the usual requirements for dangerous goods including documentation, hazard labels and segregation in loading

Oxidizing Substances and Organic peroxides

stimulates combustion upon reaction to other substance

Corrosives

substances which, by chemical action, will cause irreversible damage to the skin or, in the case of leakage will materially damage or even destroy, other goods or the means of transport

Package

the complete product of the packing operation consisting of the packaging and its contents prepared for transport
