Spontaneous Recovery

when a previously extinguished behavior seemingly randomly occurs again

Extinction Burst

when a problem behavior being addressed using extinction increased before it starts to decrease

Sensory Stimulation Function

when an individual engages in a behavior because it feels good or alleviates pain

Data and Punishment

when including punishment as a part of an intervention, data must be collected in order to determine if it is effective

Why do individuals engage in problem behavior

because the behavior works in helping them get what they want

Escape Function

behavior that results in the individual getting out of having to engage in a non-preferred activity

Gain Function

behavior that results in the individual receiving attention

Problem Behaviors

behaviors that need to be decreased and are not necessarily bad. Behavior that is problematic only under certain circumstances

Addressing behaviors maintained by automatic reinforcement

can be addressed by extinction by blocking the opportunity for the person to engage in the behavior

Differential Reinforcement (Types)

differential reinforcement of incompatible behavior (DRI). Differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA). Differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO). Differential reinforcement of low rates of behavior (DRL). Differential reinforcement of high rates of behavior (DRH)

Type 2 Punishment

negative punishment. Take away a condition to reduce a behavior

Type 1 Punishment

positive punishment. Add a condition to reduce a behavior

Extinction (how)

should be used to reduce problem behavior along with reinforcement to increase appropriate replacement behaviors

Differential Reinforcement

used to decrease problem behavior. Works by reinforcing only behaviors that should be increased and removing reinforcement for behaviors that should be decreased

When is behavior problematic

when it interferes with learning or safety

Extinction

works by abruptly stopping reinforcement for a behavior

Escape Extinction

works by not allowing the individual's problem behavior to get them out of doing whatever triggered the behavior

Motivating Operation

a variable that makes a reinforcer more or less effective

Behavioral Function

an explanation of why a behavior occurs
