[EC2] What is Amazon EC2?

Amazon EC2 (Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud) - web service, that provides resizable compute capacity in the cloud. Reduces time needed to deploy new servers to minutes, so you can quickly scale up and down. Virtual machines in the cloud.

[EC2, EBS] EBS volume types

(Elastic Block Store) - SSD, General Purpose - GP2 - (up to 10 000 IOPS) - SSD, Provisioned IOPS - IO1 - (more than 10 000 IOPS) - HDD, Throughput optimized - ST1 - frequently accessed workloads - HDD, Cold - SC1 - less frequently accessed data - HDD, Magnetic - Standard - cheap, infrequently accessed storage

[EC2, EBS] Is it possible to mount 1 EBS to multiple EC2 instances?

(Elastic Block Store) No. We shall use EFS (Elastic File System) instead. Amazon EFS provides scalable file storage for use with Amazon EC2. You can create an EFS file system and configure your instances to mount the file system. You can use an EFS file system as a common data source for workloads and applications running on multiple instances.

[EC2] EC2 pricing models.

- On Demand - pay fixed rate by hour/second - Reserved - provide you a capacity reservation + discount on the hourly charge. 1 or 3 Years Terms. - Spot - enable you to bid whatever price you want for instance capacity (overall demand low->prices are lower). If the price is lower, than your bid, you rent servers. - Dedicated Hosts - Physical EC2 server, dedicated for your use. Can help you reduce costs by allowing you to use your existing server-bound software licenses.

[EC2, EBS] What is Amazon EBS?

Amazon EBS (Elastic Block Store) Allows to create storage volumes and attach them to your Amazon EC2 instances. Once attached, you can create FS, deploy DB or use any other way. Amazon EBS are placed in a specific Availability Zone, where they are automatically replicated to protect you from failure of a single component.

[EC2] What is termination protection of EC2 instance?

By default is disabled. It protects you from accidental termination of your instance (if it was turned on, you first should turn it off manually, then terminate)

[EC2] What happens when you delete EC2 instance with its drives (EBS)?

By default they are deleted too.

[EC2, EBS] Can we encrypt EBS volumes?

EBS (Elastic Block Store) root volumes on your default AMI's (Amazon Machine Image) cannot be encrypted. It is possible to use a third party tool or this can be done when creating AMI's (lab to follow) in the AWS console or using the API. Others could be encrypted.

[EC2] Can you choose a network on creating an EC2 instance?

Yes. One network is stands for one availability zone.

[EC2] Differences in terminating spot instances by you and by AWS.

if you terminate spot instance, you pay for that hour if AWS terminates you instance due to changes in prices you get this hour for free
