Explain how a word can be a morphemic noun and a syntactic adverb in the same sentence.
Syntax is the relationship between words and morphology is the relationship between one part of a word to another part of a word. A morphemic noun is able to take inflections marking plural, possessive, or both. The word can also be able to be classified as a syntactic adverb as it takes the role of an adverb as well.
Compare the traditional eight parts of speech to the twelve morphological classifications found in structural linguistics. List the differences and the similarities between the two systems of classifications.
The traditional eight parts of speech are noun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, interjection, conjunction, and pronoun. Morphology is defined as: "the branch of grammar that deals with the forms of words and their formation, as by inflection or derivation." Each system has its uses in English grammar. Using the morphological classifications allows for more in-depth sentences to be made while traditional grammar allows for one's point to be more easily understood.
