Phoenix

After the bombing of the city, Granger compares mankind to a phoenix that burns itself up and then rises out of its ashes over and over again. The symbol of the phoenix's rebirth refers not only to the cyclical nature of history and the collective rebirth of humankind but also to Montag's resurrection

allusion

An allustion is a reference to something historical in the past. One example of an allusion is when a woman comes out of the house and says "Play the man, Master Ridley: we shall this day light such a candle by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out." This is an example of an allusion because Beatty tells Montag that what he said earlier on was spoken by a man who was burnt alive in a fire in 1555.

Describe the character archetype mentor. Who is the mentor in the novel? Explain your answer.

An archetype mentor is a character in the novel who accompanies the hero, and pushes the hero to improve. The mentor of this novel is Iff, the water genie Haroun meet. Iff has been with Haroun majority of the novel and tells him life lessons he can learn from. Iff shows all the descriptions of a mentor in this novel, with trying to push haroun to be the best person he could be and help him make the right decisions. One main reason why Iff is the mentor is because he travels with Haroun majority of the story because he shows a good role model for Haroun, because he is gentle and kind.

metaphor

An example of a metaphor is when Guy is hearing the voice of Captain Beatty in his head saying "Light the first page, light the second page. Each becomes a black butterfly..." (Bradbury 38). This is an example of a metaphor because he is using the example of the burnt pages being like a black butterfly.

What happens to Beatty? How? What does Montag realize when running from the scene? Do you think Montag is right? Why or why not?

Beatty is burnt by Montag, he dies, he has realized what he has done, montag was right in the sense of his situation, but if it wasn't that big of a deal it wouldn't have been right.

"Out of the nursery into the college and back to the nursery; there's your intellectual pattern for the past five centuries or more" (Bradbury 52).

Beatty said this quote when beatty goes to montags house. The importance of this quote explains when kids go into school they never really learn anything, because it goes by so fast, and they dont read books.

"A book is a loaded weapon in the house. Burn it. Take the shot from the weapon. Breach man's mind. Who knows who will be the target of the well read man?" (Bradbury 58).

Beatty said this quote when guy asked him about books and they had a conversation about books. He told him this as he told why the goverment decided to get rid of books. Also Beatty says the books give too much power. He uses simlies to desribe how a book is like a loaded weapon because it gives off too much infomationto people, and Beatty is trying to persuade guy to not read books, or get and intrest of reading them.

"Old Montag wanted to fly near the sun and now that he's burnt his da-- wings, he wonders why." Didn't I hint enough when I sent the Hound around your place?" (107)

Beatty to Montag- Montag did not take all the hints that Beatty has given him. Also, comparing Montag to Icarus.

Why did Montag kill Captain Beatty?

Beatty was aware that Montag was wearing a radio transmitter, and he was determined to find out who was on the other end

Why does Montag not want to go to work anymore? What are some revelations he has had?

Because of the women they burned. They burn up thousands of books, each taking a long time to be though out, but they're gone in minutes

What do the firemen do in the world of Fahrenheit 451?

Burn books

"But, but but what is the point of giving person's Freedom of Speech...if you say then say they must not utilize the same? And is not the Power of Speech the greatest Power of all? Then surely it must be exercised to the full?"

Butt the Hoopoe said this when he is thinking about the use of speech, if it can not be used in Chup. This shows the importance of censorship and freedom of speech, due to the war between chup and gup. This also can be a part of Rushdie's life, after writing The Satanic Verses, because people found it disrespectful.

Clarisse's disappearance

Clarisse and Montag were finally becoming friends when Clarisse disappears. When Clarisse disappears Guy is told by his wife Mildred that Clarisse's family moved out of the block and that Clarisse was killed when she was hit by a car. This made Guy very upset that she was gone because she was the only different person in his life, and she was very intelligent to him.

Who is Faber? What is his profession? How did Montag originally meet him? Why did he go back to him?

Faber is the old man who monatg meet in the park a year ago. Faber used to be an english professor, but not anymore. He went back to him because he knew he knew about books.

"Do you know why books such as this are so important? Because they have quality. And what does the word quality mean? To me it means texture. This book has pores" (Bradbury 79).

Faber said this quote when guy asks him to help him get more people to read books. They think that they could get books to fire stations so that they could burn them down,or they could get a friend who has a printer to help print more books by copying the ones they have. It helps create trust between the two people so that they know they can trust each other. He also proves that he is on his side by reading the bible and bringing it to him.

foreshadowing

Foreshadowing is an indication of a future event, which bradbury uses alot in this book. One example of when he used foreshadowing was when the narrator said " He stood looking at the ventilator grill in the hall and suddenly remembered that something lay hidden behind the grill." He is referreing to the books he has stoared in there. This happend after clarisse asked him is he was truly happy.

"What-the smell of kerosene?...You never wash it off completely" (Bradbury 6).

Guy Montag said this quote on page 4. During this scene he was talking to clarisse, his new neigbor who just moved in nextdoor. This quote signifies how you carry what you do in the past, like for guy, watching the woman burn in the fire, but when he saidb this, he was talking about how his wife complains about the smell of it. This shows who he is and his job. He is used to this smell, whcih means he is also used to doing his job, buring books, until his perspective changes.

Why does Faber consider himself a coward? Do you agree or disagree? Explain your answer based on the text.

He considers himself a coward because he didnt stop the people from taking away the books. I disagree with this because he truly isnt a coward, he just is upset hye didnt stop the governemnt from doing this.

Why did Montag burn the book of poetry in the wall incinerator in his home?

He had been told to do so by Faber, through the transmitter, to show the ladies he was playing a joke on them

Why didn't Montag run away before he killed Captain Beatty?

He knew the mechanical hound was in the neighborhood and would kill him

According to Clarisse, how is Montag "not like the others"?

He looks at her when she talks and thinks about what she says

Why did Montag take whiskey, a suitcase, and some of Faber's dirty clothes with him

He needed some strong-smelling things to throw the dog off his scent

The subway. Idenitfy at least two things Montag does on the subway ride to Faber's. What is the importance of this scene?

He reads the Bible on the subway and reads the book of Job really loud because he is getting distracted by the ad, and he realizes the faster he reads; the less he comprehends. He also screams at the ad since he cannot concentrat on reading. the importance of this is to show us how technology is everywhere

Why did Faber decide to go to St. Louis?

He wanted to enlist the help of an unemployed printer to begin making copies of books

What was Montag willing to do to convince Faber to help carry out the plan?

He would destroy his book, page by page, until Faber would cooperate

Why is it ironic that so many people are afraid of firemen?

In our society we think of firemen as heroes

The main war is between ______ ________________ and _____________________________.

guppies and chups

Antigone dies by

hanging

Mildred's suicide attempt

In this scene Montag comes home to see his wife on the floor unconscious from an overdose on medication, after calling for help they are able to give Mildred new blood and a new stomach. The following day when Guy mentions the prior night she doesn't remeber. She was deniying the fact that she is unhappy, like everyone esle in society, but didnt want to admit it.

Name themes and think of example for each

Individuality vs. Conformity; Entertainment & Media; Technology; Knowledge vs. Ignorance; Censorship/Government Control

At the end, the Walrus grants Haroun one wish for his heroics, and Haroun wishes for

What was different about the fire Montag saw after leaving the river?

It was giviong warmth and comfort, not destroying things

The novel attempts to answer the question: "what's the use of stories that aren't even true?" What does Khattam-Shud believe about stories? What do you believe is the use of stories that aren't even true?

Khattam-Shud believes stories don't matter because they serve no right in helping people, and they are not necessary (censorship). I believe stories help open up imaginations and creative minds to be born, and help you with events in your life. Also these stories can give you a different view on the world and explore your imagination.

What are the two machines being used on Montag's wife? What do they do?

Machine like a snake slides into the stomach and drinks the green matter. The other machine pumps blood from the body and replaces it with fresh blood and serum

Describe the Mechanical Hound.

Made up of brass, copper, steel, ruby glass eyes, sensitive capillary hairs in nylon-brushed nostrils, eight legs, rubber-padded paws

Montag's house with Mildred's friends. What does Montag read? How does Mildred explain the situation to her friends? What is the importance of this scene?

Montag reads The Sea of Faith, and the women are offended and want to leave after he read it. Mildred says that firemen are aloud to books home and read them to get it out of their system. The women leave and this meant that they could turn in Montag for reading books.

"He opened the book halfway and peered at it. 'We begin by beginning, I guess'" (Bradbury 68).

Montag said this quote when he told mildred that he had many books stored and wanted to read them at least once. He realized when reading books you need to start at the beginning of the book, and it is also the start of his new journeyof happiness.

"We have everything we need to be happy, but we aren't happy. Something's missing. I looked around. The only think I positively knew was gone was the books I'd burned in ten or twelve years. So I thought books might help" (Bradbury 78).

Montag said this quote, and talks about how the society was built to make people have false happiness. This is why people like Mildred try to overdose countless times. Guy comes to him with no one left to talk to as Clarisse is "dead", and Mildred will not listen to him. This shows that Guy trusts Faber enough and vise versa so that either will not turn the other in.

"I've had two children by Caesarian section. No use going through all that agony for a baby. The world must reproduce, you know, the race must go on. Besides, they sometimes look just like you, and that's nice. Two Caesarians turned the trick, yes, sir" (Bradbury 92).

Mrs Bowles says the quote, and talks about her kids which she does not see them that often as she drops them off at daycare. Mildred and her firends talk about boring subjects and watch tv to pass the time and do not really seem happy. Mrs. Bowles does not know her kids well and talks about them as if they are strangers. This shows the way society is inwhich no one is truely happy.

Name two allusions in Part II and identify their importance.

One allusion in part 2 is when the jets fly over the house. This resembles when bradbury wrote this book, world war 2 was going on, or just ended. This could be referring to thinking that world war 3 would be going on during this time. Another allusion in part 2 is in one of the lines montag refers to the cheshire cat from alice in wonderland. Montag makes many referen ces to books, and resembles Beatty's similar way of quoting famous books.

Using at least two characters and/or events, describe how the novel is an allegory for censorship.

One character and event which describes how this novel is an allegory for censorship is The Khattam-Shud when he makes the law of silence, which blocks learning to the community and makes the community less intelligent. The 2 cities are blocked off from each other and Gup tries to save the sea of stories and the Chup's try to destroy or censor it. Another allegory for censorship is the purpose of the novel and why it was written, the story of Rushdie and his son to explain the story, but exclude the harsh reality. Like in the story when the Chips try to ruin and pollute the sea of stories to block the knowledge.

Part II ends with the beginning of the novel's climax. What is it and what happens?

Part 2 ends with guy going to the fire house, and they get a call to go to a house. The house they end up going to is Montags house. This is the last senetnce of the section. The importance of this is to show the readers how montage live has changed

Provide the meaning of "The Sieve and the Sand," both literally and figuratively.

The meaning of the sieve and the sand is a past expirience for montag , when his cousin bet he coulnt fill a sieve with sand. Guy reffered to this when he said if he reads the book fast he could memorize it, get some sand in the sieve .

Prove that the ending of the novel is a happy one. Use two examples from the novel.

The novel is an example of a happy ending due to many reasons. One of them being Harouns mom came back and his family is together and Rashid got his story's back and can tell stories again, and then tells the story of haroun's story and spread it on, making the story end happily as a close nit family. And another reason is the Khattam-Shud is defeated and the waters are not polluted anymore, making everyone happy again.

"I promise. Mr. Sengupta is khattam-shud"

The speaker is Soraya, Haroun's mother. This was said at the end of the novel when Soraya was complaining about Mr sengupta, as the irony of their relationship. She ran away with him, and then came back complaining about him and regret running away with him. The importance to this quote is a realization or irony of realizing how bad of a person mr sengupta is, and how he is related in a sese to the Khattam-Shud.

What did Montag and the intellectuals believe their mission to be once the war was ended?

The death of the woman at 11 Elm

This death, caused montag to view his job in a different way. He realized after this, that he doesnt want to work as a firman anymore, due to this expirience, and also broke the laws by taking one of the books. This changed his whole view on life and made him want to read books, because if the woman died with her books, they must mean something.

"So often the Shadow leads, and it is the Person or Self or Substance that follows. And of course there can be quarrels between the Shadow and the Substance or Self or Person; they can pull in opposite directions...but just as often there is a true partnership, and mutual respect"

This quote is said by Murda when he was explaining shadows and the importance of having them. The importance of this is that it shows what shadows can do, and when they are pulled apart it affects them and the weakness of being apart from your shadow. This can also show the archetypal character of a doppelganger (look alike and opposite side of that person) , and the opposite side of that person.
