Cause and effect

A series of events linked together where one event causes another, which causes another, etc.

Also called falling action. Occurs after the climax. Conflict is resolved and loose ends are tied up

Exposition

Sets the tone establishes the setting, introduces the characters, gives the reader important background information.

Narrative nonfiction

Tells a true story that includes a real setting, all the elements of plot, actual people, and a point of view

Climax

The moment when the reader's interest and emotional intensity reach the highest point. Usually occurs toward the end of a story, after conflict has been understood and you become emtionally involved w/ characters. Sometimes called the "turning point".

Writing that helps a reader picture scenes, events, and characters. Often appeals to the five sentences

Foreshadowing

a writer's use of hints or clues to indicate events and situations that will occur later in a plot. This creates suspense

Flat characters

characters who are described more simply

Rising action

events in a story that move the plot along by adding complications or expanding the conflict. Usually builds suspence to a climax, or turning point,

figurative language

language that communicates ideas beyond the ordinary, literal meanings of the words. Similes, metaphors, and personifications are examples of this

Nonfiction

prose writing that deals with real people, things, events, and places. Major Tyler's are autobiography,biography, essay, newspapers.

Narrator

the character or voice from whose point of view events are told. Could be 1st person, 3rd person, etc

Theme

the main idea of a work of literature. A perception (idea) about life or human nature (how people behave)

the people, animals, or imaginary creatures that take part in the action of the story

Dialogue

written conversation between two or more characters in either fiction or non fiction. Gives insight into characters' qualities, personality traits, and reactions to other characters. Commonly set off with quotation marks.
