And in the very end, he ends up happy with the marriage. Therefore, as seen from her tale, the Wife of Bath believes that marriage is essential in life.

Thus, one's reaction would most likely be shocked. My reaction would be different. I would have been a little surprised. There was such a mix up with the falcon, I would have to be a little shocked. But I understand that it is just a story. I was prepared for the fact that something interesting could happen at anytime in the plot. And while what happened was sad, it was just another small part in the story. Therefore, my reaction would be a bit surprised and mostly uncaring.
