Analyze

Break into separate parts and discuss, examine, or interpret each part. Then give your opinion.

illustrate

Clarify an idea by giving examples of it. illustration often involves comparison and contrast. (Read the test directions to see whether the question calls for actually drawing a diagram as well.)

Discuss

Consider and debate or argue the pros and cons of an issue. Write about any conflict. Compare and contrast.

Diagram

Create a drawing, chart, or other visual element. Label and explain key parts.

Compare

Examine two or more items. Identify similarities and differences.

State

Explain precisely and clearly.

Define

Explain the exact meaning-- usually a meaning specific to the course or subject. Definitions are usually short.

Interpret

Explain the meaning of a new idea or event by showing how it relates to more familiar ideas or events. Interpretation can involve evaluation

Summarize

Give a brief, condensed account. Include main ideas and conclusions. Avoid supporting details , or include only significant details.

Describe

Give a detailed account. Make a picture with words. List characteristics, qualities, and parts.

Enumerate

List the main parts or features in a meaningful order and briefly describe each one.

Outline

List the main topics, points, features, or events and briefly describe each one. ( This does not necessarily mean creating a traditional outline with Roman numerals, numbers, and letters.)

Explain

Make an idea clear. Show logically how a concept is developed. Give the reasons for an event.

Evaluate

Make judgments about accuracy, quality, or both. (similar to criticize)

Criticize

Make judgments about accuracy, quality, or both. Evaluate comparative worth. Criticism often involves analysis.

Contrast

Show differences. Set in opposition.

Relate

Show the connections between ideas or events. Provide a larger context for seeing the big picture.

Trace

Show the order of events or the progress of a subject or event.

Prove

Support with facts, examples, and quotations from credible sources ( especially those presented in class or in the text).

List

Write a series of concise statements (similar to enumerate)
