Drug Tolerance

decreased susceptibility (same as decreased response) to a given amount of a drug as a result of previous exposure

Tachyphylaxis

special causes of drug tolerance where a decrease in a person's sensitivity to a drug occurs over a very short period of time-sometimes over only a few hours

Symptoms of Drug Abstinence (withdrawal)

-(resulting physical signs and symptoms) occur when a drug is terminated usually after prolonged use; or when a specific antagonist is given; the syndrome results in signs and symptoms opposite from the action of the drug; it is highly correlated with dose and duration of use; the signs and symptoms are not usually displayed until at least 12 hours, or longer, after the last dose

Context-Specific Tolerance

-behavioral, learned, or associative—very sensitive to environment or behavioral conditions

Cross Tolerance

-refers to the development of tolerance to one type of drug which results in decreased sensitivity to the effects of another type of drug

Drug Dependence

a person's use of drugs has led to the user experiencing uncontrollable and unpleasant mood states that in turn lead the user to use the drug compulsively despite the adverse consequences
