Exam 2 Drug Tolerance
Drug Tolerance
decreased susceptibility (same as decreased response) to a given amount of a drug as a result of previous exposure
Tachyphylaxis

Symptoms of Drug Abstinence (withdrawal)
-(resulting physical signs and symptoms) occur when a drug is terminated usually after prolonged use; or when a specific antagonist is given; the syndrome results in signs and symptoms opposite from the action of the drug; it is highly correlated with dose and duration of use; the signs and symptoms are not usually displayed until at least 12 hours, or longer, after the last dose
Context-Specific Tolerance
-behavioral, learned, or associative—very sensitive to environment or behavioral conditions
Cross Tolerance
-refers to the development of tolerance to one type of drug which results in decreased sensitivity to the effects of another type of drug
Drug Dependence
a person's use of drugs has led to the user experiencing uncontrollable and unpleasant mood states that in turn lead the user to use the drug compulsively despite the adverse consequences
