Steel lanyards provide no give, thus they have large arresting forces. Nylon rope provides mild arresting forces, however it bounces, so the wearer experiences lots of jolts. (as rule of thumb add 2 feet to necessary pre-fall length of nylon lanyard to accommodate for stretch after the fall) Lanyard stretching/tearing system (known as energy absorber or deceleration device) generally folded and sewn into a small packet on the lanyard, absorbs the shock and prevents bouncing. (reducing the arresting forces)

Erect toeboards, screens or guardrail systems to prevent objects from falling. Erect a canopy structure and keep potential falling objects far enough from the edge of the higher level so that those objects would not go over the edge if they were accidentally displaced.
