The voyage
1519 - set sail from Seville Spain 5 ships - trinity ( flagship) Sailed along part of the coast of Africa , then sailed west across the atlantic until they reached the coast of South America 1520 - went through a strait narrow piece of water called El Paso that was at the tip of south america between the atlantic and pacific ocean it is now called the Magellan Straits From there the sailed in a north- westerly direction towards the spice islands He called the waters the pacific ocean because they were calm They reached the Philippians were Magellan was killed in 1521 2 of the 5 ships reached the spice islands in november 1521

The consequences of Magellan voyage
Spain had found a new route to the spice islands They sailed west across the atlantic instead of east around Africa It was the first voyage to circumnavigate the globe It proved the world was round

The treaty of Tordesillas (1494) This was an agreement between Spain and Portugal They drew a line in the map of the world Any land to the west belonged to spain Any land to the east belonged to portugal (Page 160 in book) According to the treaty of Tordesillas spain could claim any land found to the east of brazil The spainish began going to south America in greater numbers They wanted to conquer the native people and claim new lands The people who led these expeditions were called CONQUISTADORS (conquers)
