During the presidential election of 1824, Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams, and Henry Clay were the strongest candidates. Andrew Jackson received the most popular votes, but no candidate received the majority of electoral votes. Under the terms of the Constitution, when no candidate receives a majority of the electoral votes, the House of Representatives selects the president. Henry Clay was the Speaker of the House. He met with Adams before the House vote. Clay agreed to use his influence to get Adams elected president. In return, Clay wanted to be Secretary of State. After Adams was elected, he made Clay Secretary of State. Jackson's followers accused Clay and Adams of making a "corrupt bargain" and stealing the presidential election.
