auxiliary verbs

also called 'helping verbs' are combined with verbs to form verb phrases. ex. had, do, might, would, will, must, could, and would.

proper adjectives

are formed from proper nouns. They're capitalized and often end with -n, -an, -ian, -ese, -or ish ex. Chinese, Spanish.

articles

are the most common adjectives

coordinating conjunction

are word pairs that join words or groups of words. ex. both... and, either...or, not only...but also, and whether...or.

is a word or phase that expresses a feeling ex. Wow!

verb

is a word used to express an action, a condition, or a state of being.

intensifier

is an adverb that defines the degree of an adj. or another adverb. ex. quite, very.

object of the preposition

is the noun or pronoun that follows the preposition

conjunctive adverb

is used to express relationships between independent clauses. ex. finally, furthermore, however, instead, and still.

indefinite articles

(a and an) refer to the unspecified members of groups of people, places, things, or ideas.

linking verb

links the subject of the sentence to a word in the predicate. ex.am, is, was, were,appear, become, feel, look, remain, sound, and taste, express conditions.

adverbs

modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. they answer where, when, how, and what. ex.here, rather early, swiftly, almost

collective noun

name of a group ex. flock

proper noun

name of a particular person, place, thing, or idea ex. California

abstract noun

names an idea, quality, or characteristic ex. trust

concrete noun

names an object that can be seen, heard, smelled, touched, or tasted ex. orange

plural noun

names more than one person, place,thing, or idea ex. trees

singular noun

names one person, place, thing, or idea ex.tree

possessive noun

noun that shows ownership or relationship ex. star's mansion

compound preposition

prepositions formed from more than one word. ex. according to, in place of, and instead of.

definite articles

refers to a specific person, place or thing or idea ex. THE

preposition

shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence. ex. about, before, by, during, on, and under

compound noun

single noun formed from two or more words. ex. grapefruit
