The fuel gauge indicates the amount of fuel in the tank. Note: Be sure to add fuel before operating the vehicle. Do not rely on a potentially faulty gauge reading, especially if refueling during your mission may be a problem.

Exterior Components Fuel Tank Filler Cap

The fuel tank filler cap, on the right rear side of the vehicle, provides access to the fuel tank for refueling. The cap screws to the fuel tank opening. It is secured to the fuel tank opening by a chain. A screen in the neck of the tank opening helps to prevent debris from getting into the fuel tank. On the M1114, a fuel door covers the fuel tank filler cap.

Characteristics and Capabilities Road Grade

The fully loaded M1123 vehicle can climb a road grade as steep as 60 percent (31 degrees). The heavier ECVs, when fully loaded, are capable of climbing a grade of 40 percent (22 degrees). note: The road grade percentage represents the steepness of slope you can climb. For example, if you are driving up a hill with a 22 percent incline, you will climb 22 ft for every 100 ft traveled horizontally.

Characteristics and Capabilities Side Slope

The fully loaded M1123 vehicle can travel across a side slope of up to 40 percent (22 degrees). The heavier ECV vehicles, when fully loaded, can negotiate a side slope of 30 percent (17 degrees). To avoid the risk of rollover, you must be particularly careful, when traveling across a slope, not to exceed the capability of the vehicle. The danger of rollover increases as the vehicle weight and side slope angle increase.

Instrument Cluster High Beam Lamp

The high beam lamp illuminates when you switch the headlights to the high beam position.

Drivetrain Propeller Shafts

The propeller shafts, also called driveshafts, link the transfer case to the front and rear differentials. Universal joints, located at either end of the front and rear propeller shafts, permit inline driving power between the transfer case and differentials even though they are mounted at different angles.

Dashboard Switches and Lights Pushbutton Switch Controls

The pushbutton light switch controls exterior lights and instrument panel lights. The switch is operated by pushing the desired light selection button, then pressing the ENTER button. After selecting a different light pushbutton, the ENTER button must be pressed within five seconds or the light setting will not change. Your vehicle service lights are on. Perform the following steps to turn on the instrument panel lights. 1. push the PANEL BRT button to initialize the function 2. Push ENTER button within five seconds.

Speedometer/Odometer

The speedometer indicates vehicle speed: -The outer ring of numbers shows vehicle speed in miles per hour (mph). -The inner ring of numbers shows vehicle speed in kilometers per hour (km/h). The odometer indicates accumulated mileage. The maximum allowable speed for M-Series vehicles on most military installations is 45 mph. Check the regulations aboard your installation before operating the vehicle.

Dashboard Switches and Lights Tachometer/Hour Meter

The tachometer is located above the windshield, beside the wiper motor. It shows engine revolutions per minute (RPM) and engine running time in hours. The tachometer hour meter is important when planning maintenance, especially for vehicles with communication or radar equipment that remain stationary with the engine running for long periods. For example, engine oil is usually changed every 3000 miles. But when the engine has been run for 200 hours following an oil change, the technical manual requires that the oil be changed again, even if the vehicle has not traveled a long distance.

Exterior Components Tailgate

The tailgate is located at the rear of the vehicle. Chains and hooks on either side of the tailgate secure the tailgate to the rear of the vehicle's body. The tailgate chains are covered with a silencing material to minimize the noise during tactical operations. Some vehicles have a rear hatch or shell door. Support rods on either side of the hatch hold it open when loading.

tool bag

The tool bag holds the following hand tools: -Slip-joint pliers -Cross-tip screwdriver: number 2 phillips cross-tip screwdriver 7 1/2 inches long -Flat-tip screwdriver 7 3/4 inches long with a 3/16 inch wide tip -Adjustable wrench: Adjustable Wrench, 8 inches long

Exterior Components Towing Pintle

The towing pintle, located at the center rear of the vehicle, provides a connection point for towing equipment such as a trailer. The HMMWV can also flat tow a disabled HMMWV using a tow bar.

Exterior Components Trailer Receptacle

The trailer receptacle, located near the towing pintle, provides electrical power to the lights on towed equipment. When the trailer's electrical cable is plugged into the receptacle, the trailer's lights operate in tandem with the vehicle's lights.

Drivetrain Transfer Case

The transfer case directs engine-to-transmission power to the front and rear propeller shafts and differentials simultaneously. The HMMWV is always in four-wheel drive. The transfer case has four shift range selections for different driving situations: -Three drive positions -A neutral position The "normal" transfer case range on hard road surfaces is high (H). High lock (H/L) and low lock (L) are only used when one or more wheels are slipping due to mud, ice, snow, or other adverse conditions.

Shift Lever Console Transfer Case Range Selection

The transfer case selection lever has four positions for different driving situations. Select the high lock (HL) range when the wheels are slipping and additional traction is needed. when operating in mud, snow, loose sand, or on ice this range can increase traction and import vehicle control. Select the high (H) range when operating on all dry primary, secondary, and off-road surface, with little or no wheel slippage. this range should be used on all high traction surfaces. select the neutral (N) range when the vehicle is disabled and must be towed. Select the low (L) range only when high ranges do not provide sufficient power for steep hills or sufficient breaking on downgrades. this range should be used when the wheels are slipping in mud or snow and cannot be freed using the HL range.

Engine Compartment Transmission Oil Dipstick

The transmission oil dipstick is located at the right rear of the engine, just behind the coolant surge tank. Use the transmission oil dipstick to check the transmission fluid level per the procedure in the operator's manual. To remove the dipstick, lift the "T" handle to unlock, and then pull to remove. Check the fluid level on the dipstick. If low, add transmission fluid through the dipstick tube. When done, place the dipstick back into its opening and twist for a good seal. Then push the "T" handle down to lock

Permanent armor (M1114)

The up-armored M1114 has permanently installed armor protection including steel-plated doors, steel plating under and over the cab, ballistic-resistant glass, and a ballistic-resistant grille. The M1114 armor is not designed for removal/reinstallation

Instrument Cluster Voltmeter

The voltmeter indicates the charging level and activity of the battery charging system when the engine is running. The voltmeter normally registers in the green area. If the voltmeter needle stays in the yellow or red areas, the battery is not charging and the vehicle is not fully mission capable.

Dashboard Switches and Lights Directional Signal/Emergency Flasher - Warning Hazard Control

The warning hazard control causes all the run signal lights to flash on and off at the same time 1. Turn light switch to STOP LIGHT or SER. DRIVE. 2. Push the wiring hazard control tab. 3. Move the directional signal lever up. Note: The brake lights override the vehicle's hazard warning lights. If you push on the brake pedal, the hazard warning lights will not flash.

Drivetrain Wheel Hubs

The wheel hubs are the final drive components to the front and rear wheels. The hubs are unusual in that they are geared. This design allows for a gear reduction to increase torque to the wheels.

Dashboard Switches and Lights Windshield Wiper Control

The windshield washer/wiper control knob is located on the wiper motor, at the center top of the windshield. Washer/wiper operation is as follows: Rotate the control knob clockwise to low or high speed to turn on the wiper. To operate the washer, first turn on the wiper, and then press the control knob.

Vehicle Systems Introduction

There are three additional HMMWV systems with which you should be familiar. Two of the systems are installed on armored ECVs: Air conditioning for the crew Automatic fire suppression The third system, a weapon station, is installed on the M1114 and M1151 armament carriers.

Dashboard Switches and Lights Light Switch Types

There are two versions of light switch used in the HMMWV, a lever-type and a pushbutton switch. The lever-type switch is most commonly used, but some vehicles have the pushbutton switch installed.

Exterior Components Cargo Tiedowns

Use the cargo tiedowns and strap assemblies to secure cargo in your vehicle. Note: Individual weapons, packs, or troop gear are not cargo.

Shift Lever Console Transfer Case Shift Lever

Use the transfer case shift lever to select transfer case ranges. The transfer case indicator lamp just in front of the shift lever illuminates when the transfer case is shifted to the high lock (H/L) or the low (L) range. Before shifting the transfer case lever, you must stop the vehicle and put the transmission shift lever in neutral (N). Note: Under normal circumstances, you will be able to shift the transfer case with the vehicle stopped and engine running. But if the transfer case is hard to shift or you hear a grinding noise, shut off the engine, and then complete the transfer case shift.
