The directional signal/emergency flasher assembly is on the left side of the steering column. It consists of a directional signal lever, warning hazard control, and indicator light. The indicator light flashes on and off when you use the turn signal or turn on the warning flashers.

Reinsert the dipstick. b. Remove the dipstick. c. Check the level of the oil using the markings on the dipstick. 4. Replace the dipstick and turn clockwise to tighten.

Engine Compartment Engine Oil Filler Cap

The engine oil filler cap is located at the front center of the engine. To add engine oil, remove the oil filler cap by turning it counterclockwise Use only the appropriate engine oil for the operating condition in accordance with the technical manual.

The pamphlet bag holds the operator's manual and may contain other manuals or instructions for equipment installed on the vehicle. The pamphlet bag is kept under or behind the driver's seat.

Drivetrain

The expanded capacity vehicles (ECVs) have four driving wheels, powered by a V-8, liquid-cooled, turbocharged diesel engine. The drivetrain connects the engine to the wheels. It consists of a transmission, transfer case, differentials, and hubs. The drivetrain provides various transmission and transfer case drive ranges to handle the different terrain and driving conditions you may encounter.

Engine Compartment Fan Clutch Override

The fan clutch override is located next to the windshield washer reservoir. If the engine is overheating, and you find that the radiator fan is not activating, unplug the two-wire connector between the time delay module and the fan control valve to activate the fan and cool the engine.

Basic Issue Items First Aid Kit

The first aid kit contains basic items used to treat injuries. It is usually stowed under the driver's seat Note: For the M1114, the operator's manual lists the stowage location as the battery compartment. However, due to possible battery residue contamination, the first aid kit is usually stowed under the driver's seat.

DRIVE - Turns on the headlights and taillights for night driving and enables operation of the turn signals and brake lights. On some installations, headlights may be required during daylight hours. B.O. DRIVE - Turns on blackout markers and hooded blackout headlight and enables operation of the blackout stoplights when the brake pedal is depressed. B.O. MARKER - Turns on the blackout markers without the hooded headlight and enables blackout stoplight operation when the brake pedal is depressed. PARK - Turns the parking lights on and the headlights off.

The fording valve is part of the deep water fording kit installation. The fording kit allows the HMMWV to make hard bottom water crossings in water as deep as 60 inches, without flooding the engine. The fording valve control has two positions: •VENT - Use this position for normal driving and for crossing through shallow water no deeper than 30 inches. •DEEP FORD - Use this position for fording when the water is between 30 and 60 inches deep.

The front and rear differentials transmit driving power from the transfer case, through the half shafts, to the geared wheel hubs for all four wheels. When the transfer case is in high (H) range, each differential applies power to the wheel that has the best traction.

Engine Compartment Fuel Filter Drainvalve

The fuel filter drainvalve is located on the front of the engine firewall, directly below the windshield washer reservoir. If there is any moisture in the fuel, the fuel filter is designed to separate out and hold that moisture while the engine is operating. After you stop the vehicle, the fuel filter drainvalve can be used to remove any water that has collected in the fuel filter.

Instrument Cluster Fuel Gauge

The fuel gauge indicates the amount of fuel in the tank. Note: Be sure to add fuel before operating the vehicle. Do not rely on a potentially faulty gauge reading, especially if refueling during your mission may be a problem.

Exterior Components Fuel Tank Filler Cap

The fuel tank filler cap, on the right rear side of the vehicle, provides access to the fuel tank for refueling. The cap screws to the fuel tank opening. It is secured to the fuel tank opening by a chain. A screen in the neck of the tank opening helps to prevent debris from getting into the fuel tank. On the M1114, a fuel door covers the fuel tank filler cap.

Characteristics and Capabilities Road Grade

The fully loaded M1123 vehicle can climb a road grade as steep as 60 percent (31 degrees). The heavier ECVs, when fully loaded, are capable of climbing a grade of 40 percent (22 degrees). note: The road grade percentage represents the steepness of slope you can climb. For example, if you are driving up a hill with a 22 percent incline, you will climb 22 ft for every 100 ft traveled horizontally.

Characteristics and Capabilities Side Slope

The fully loaded M1123 vehicle can travel across a side slope of up to 40 percent (22 degrees). The heavier ECV vehicles, when fully loaded, can negotiate a side slope of 30 percent (17 degrees). To avoid the risk of rollover, you must be particularly careful, when traveling across a slope, not to exceed the capability of the vehicle. The danger of rollover increases as the vehicle weight and side slope angle increase.

Instrument Cluster High Beam Lamp

The high beam lamp illuminates when you switch the headlights to the high beam position.

Drivetrain Propeller Shafts

The propeller shafts, also called driveshafts, link the transfer case to the front and rear differentials. Universal joints, located at either end of the front and rear propeller shafts, permit inline driving power between the transfer case and differentials even though they are mounted at different angles.

Dashboard Switches and Lights Pushbutton Switch Controls

The pushbutton light switch controls exterior lights and instrument panel lights. The switch is operated by pushing the desired light selection button, then pressing the ENTER button. After selecting a different light pushbutton, the ENTER button must be pressed within five seconds or the light setting will not change. Your vehicle service lights are on. Perform the following steps to turn on the instrument panel lights. 1. push the PANEL BRT button to initialize the function 2. Push ENTER button within five seconds.

Speedometer/Odometer

The speedometer indicates vehicle speed: -The outer ring of numbers shows vehicle speed in miles per hour (mph). -The inner ring of numbers shows vehicle speed in kilometers per hour (km/h). The odometer indicates accumulated mileage. The maximum allowable speed for M-Series vehicles on most military installations is 45 mph. Check the regulations aboard your installation before operating the vehicle.

Dashboard Switches and Lights Tachometer/Hour Meter

The tachometer is located above the windshield, beside the wiper motor. It shows engine revolutions per minute (RPM) and engine running time in hours. The tachometer hour meter is important when planning maintenance, especially for vehicles with communication or radar equipment that remain stationary with the engine running for long periods. For example, engine oil is usually changed every 3000 miles. But when the engine has been run for 200 hours following an oil change, the technical manual requires that the oil be changed again, even if the vehicle has not traveled a long distance.

Exterior Components Tailgate

The tailgate is located at the rear of the vehicle. Chains and hooks on either side of the tailgate secure the tailgate to the rear of the vehicle's body. The tailgate chains are covered with a silencing material to minimize the noise during tactical operations. Some vehicles have a rear hatch or shell door. Support rods on either side of the hatch hold it open when loading.

Exterior Components Towing Pintle

The towing pintle, located at the center rear of the vehicle, provides a connection point for towing equipment such as a trailer. The HMMWV can also flat tow a disabled HMMWV using a tow bar.

Exterior Components Trailer Receptacle

The trailer receptacle, located near the towing pintle, provides electrical power to the lights on towed equipment. When the trailer's electrical cable is plugged into the receptacle, the trailer's lights operate in tandem with the vehicle's lights.

Drivetrain Transfer Case

The transfer case directs engine-to-transmission power to the front and rear propeller shafts and differentials simultaneously. The HMMWV is always in four-wheel drive. The transfer case has four shift range selections for different driving situations: -Three drive positions -A neutral position The "normal" transfer case range on hard road surfaces is high (H). High lock (H/L) and low lock (L) are only used when one or more wheels are slipping due to mud, ice, snow, or other adverse conditions.

Shift Lever Console Transfer Case Range Selection

The transfer case selection lever has four positions for different driving situations. Select the high lock (HL) range when the wheels are slipping and additional traction is needed. when operating in mud, snow, loose sand, or on ice this range can increase traction and import vehicle control. Select the high (H) range when operating on all dry primary, secondary, and off-road surface, with little or no wheel slippage. this range should be used on all high traction surfaces. select the neutral (N) range when the vehicle is disabled and must be towed. Select the low (L) range only when high ranges do not provide sufficient power for steep hills or sufficient breaking on downgrades. this range should be used when the wheels are slipping in mud or snow and cannot be freed using the HL range.

Engine Compartment Transmission Oil Dipstick

The transmission oil dipstick is located at the right rear of the engine, just behind the coolant surge tank. Use the transmission oil dipstick to check the transmission fluid level per the procedure in the operator's manual. To remove the dipstick, lift the "T" handle to unlock, and then pull to remove. Check the fluid level on the dipstick. If low, add transmission fluid through the dipstick tube. When done, place the dipstick back into its opening and twist for a good seal. Then push the "T" handle down to lock

Permanent armor (M1114)

The up-armored M1114 has permanently installed armor protection including steel-plated doors, steel plating under and over the cab, ballistic-resistant glass, and a ballistic-resistant grille. The M1114 armor is not designed for removal/reinstallation

Instrument Cluster Voltmeter

The voltmeter indicates the charging level and activity of the battery charging system when the engine is running. The voltmeter normally registers in the green area. If the voltmeter needle stays in the yellow or red areas, the battery is not charging and the vehicle is not fully mission capable.
