Rationing--what did the government ration?

Typewriters, gasoline, bicycles, footwear, silk, nylon, fuel oil, stoves, meat, lard, shortening and food oils, cheese, butter, margarine, processed foods (canned, bottled, and frozen), dried fruits, canned milk, firewood and coal, jams, jellies, and fruit butter were rationed by November 1943.

office of war information

a United States government agency created during WWII to consolidate existing government information services and deliver propaganda both at home and abroad. OWI operated from June 1942 until September 1945. • Made to help promote patriotism and help keep Americans united behind the war effort.

war production board

an agency of the United States government that supervised war production during World War II. President Franklin D. Roosevelt established it on January 16, 1942, with Executive Order 9024. • During WWII, FDR established it to allocate scarce materials, limit or stop the production of civilian goods, and distribute contracts among competing manufacturer

Henry Kaiser

considered the most powerful businessman in the U.S. West during WWII. • Kaiser Shipyards- CA assembly plants that were highly efficient and could produce a new warship in a mere 14 days. • The concrete he manufactured went to build Pacific military bases, his aluminum into new advanced warplanes, his steel into warships, and the thousands of cargo ships he built carried troops and supplies across the oceans to the European and Pacific war fronts. The electricity generated by the dams he built fueled the West Coast war industries.

office of price administration

established within the Office for Emergency Management by Executive Order 8875 on August 28, 1941. The functions of the OPA were originally to control money (price controls) and rents after the outbreak of World War II. • In charge of stabilizing prices and rents and preventing speculation, profiteering, hoarding and price administration. The OPA froze wages and prices and initiated a rationing program for items such as gas, oil, butter, meat, sugar, coffee and shoes in order to support the war effort and prevent inflation.

Smith Connally Anti-Strike Act 1943

gave president power to take over any war plant threatened by a strike and outlawed strikes against seized plants. • Also called The War Labor Disputes Act, (June 25, 1943) • This measure was enacted by the U.S. Congress, over President Franklin D. Roosevelt's veto, giving the president power to seize and operate privately owned war plants when an actual or threatened strike or lockout interfered with war production.

settled disputes between business and labor without strikes so that production would not be interrupted and morale would be high. • Established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on 12 January 1942 under Executive Order No. 9017
