Melodrama was the most popular dramatic form of the 20th century. In a melodrama, the plot usually unfolds as a series of trials instigated by a villain that the hero must overcome. Melodramas deal with sensational and romantic topics that appeal to the emotions of the common audience and are often exaggerated, overwrought emotionally, sentimental, dependent of sensation and simplistic conflict resolution. The Wizard of Oz is an example of a melodrama from cinema. The villain is the wicked witch of the West. After defeating the wicked witch of the west, Dorothy and her friends are rewarded by the Wizard of Oz with their hearts' desires.
