Formula Bar
A bar located between the ribbon and the worksheet in which users can edit the contents of a cell.
bar chart
A form of graph in which numeric values are represented by horizontal or vertical rectangles.
legend
A list that identifies patterns, symbols, or colors used in a chart
formula
A mathematical relationship or rule expressed in symbols.
value axis
A numerical scale on the left side of a chart that shows the range of numbers for the data points; also referred to as the y-axis.
data point
A value that originates in a worksheet cell and that is represented in a chart by a data marker
Workbook
An Excel file that contains individual worksheets. Also called a spreadsheet file.
ascending
An arrangement of text from the beginning to the end, such as from A to Z, 1 to 10, and January to December.
range
Distance between highest and lowest scores in a set of data.
Functions
Functions make it easier to put sophisticated calculations into the worksheet and make the long, laborious calculations quick and accurate. e.g. =AVG(A7:A25)
Name Box
Located below the ribbon at the left end of the formula bar. When a user types a cell location into this box and presses Enter, the insertion point moves to that cell.
work sheet
Spreadsheet used to draft an unadjusted trial balance, adjusting entries, adjusted trial balance, and financial statements.
category axis
The area along the bottom of a chart that identifies the categories of data; also referred to as the x-axis
fill handle
The small black square in the lower right corner of a selected cell
Column header
The top block in a vertical column on a datasheet, containing the field name.
sort
To arrange data alphabetically, numerically, or chronologically.
Column Chart
a chart that uses bars of varying height to illustrate values in a worksheet
pie chart
a circular chart divided into triangular areas proportional to the percentages of the whole
Active Cell
a selected worksheet cell that is ready for data entry
Spreadsheets software
allows users to enter data into rows and columns and perform computations or make graphs based on the data given
worksheet title
descriptive name about what is stored in the worksheet
descending
sort order arranging text or numbers from Z to A, largest to smallest, or latest to earliest
