Describe three basic management styles commonly encountered by employees.

Authoritarian, Democratic, and Laissez-faire

Situation A: Andrea is always willing to share her office supplies with her coworkers when they run out of something. Situation B: Michelle's coworker just made an excellent presentation at the meeting. Michelle tells him, "Good job!" Situation C: Ben's coworker has an idea that will work better than Ben's idea, so Ben agrees to go along with it.

Demonstrating being cooperative

Situation A: Gina wasn't feeling well this morning, but she knew she was well enought to go to work, so she didn't call in sick. Situation B: Ethan always meets his work deadlines.

Demonstrating carrying your own weight

Situation A: Nicole likes to dress a little differently from everyone else. This is part of her signature style. However, when she goes to work, she always dresses appropriately for her office environment. Situation B: Gabe's desk is very close to his coworker's desk. When his coworker takes a private phone call, Gabe doesn't listen in or ask questions about the conversaation. Situation C: Some of Anna's coworkers are gossiping in the break room, but she refuses to participate.

Situation A: Sandy is new at her job and, even though she is well-trained, realizes that she has a lot to learn. She remains open-minded to learning new things from her coworkers. Situation B: Dave joined a Tuesday-night bowling league with some of his coworkers. Situation C: Janna is taking the time to learn more about her coworker's interests and goals.

Situation: Jeremy's entire tea has to work late tonight. Even though Jerey's not happy about it, he doesn't ffrumble or complain.

Each day is influenced by interactions and relationships with supervisors and coworkers. Getting along with supervisors and coworks does not always come easily or naturally. With determination and work, one can build positive relationships with everyone on a work team.

Laissez-Faire Mangers

Managers who assume little or not leadership responsibility, allowing subordinates to determine their own work behavior and productivity level

Democratic managers

Managers who like to exercise only a moderate degree of control over employees; tend to involve employees in decision making and problem solving

Authoritarian managers

Managers who prefer to exercise a high degree of control over their subordinates; tend to see themselves as the sole source of authority

Authoritarian Management Style

Supervisors who lean toward the authoritarian style of management are very "in-charge" people who prefer to exercise a high degree of control over their employees. Characteristics: Enjoy being in command Rely almost completelly upon their own judgment Create detailed plans and procedures for employees to follow Give very specific orders and instructions to employees Handle all major work-related problems themselves Make allsignificant decisions themselves

Democratic Management Style

Supervisors who practicee the democratic style of management exercise only a moderate degree of control over their employees. They generally believe that people are interest in and enjoy their work. Characteristics: Seek input fromemployees Encourage employees toparticipate in planning and decision-making Discuss possible solutions to work-related problems with employees Explain reasons behind changes in work policies, procedures, etc. Share authority For committees and call frequent meetings

Laissez-faire Management Style

Supervisors with this style take a hands-off approach to managing employees. They exercise very little or no control over their workers. This style could be excellent in work environments requiring maximum creativity from employees. Characteristics: Provide only general guidance Avoid giving specific, detailed directions Permit employees to function independently Encourage creativity Encourage initiative
