Math 6 Review Sheet Place Value, Rounding, and Fraction Basics- Page 2
Rounding a number
Find the number it is closest to. Look at the number after the place you want to round to: 4 or below, let it go (keep the same) 5 or above, give it a shove (increase number) For decimals, drop all other digits For numbers greater than 1, make remaining digits 0.
Solve proportion
Scale up or down (multiply or divide top and bottom by same number to make it true) Cross multiply and divide by the number across from the variable
Greatest common factor
The highest number that divides exactly into two or more numbers
Least common multiple
The smallest multiple (other than zero) that two or more numbers have in common.
Place value
The value of a digit based on its position within a number
mixed number
a number made up of a whole number and a fraction
write a number in standard form from expanded
add all the numbers up, Make sure to put all numbers in the correct place value
simplify a fraction
divide the numerator (top) and the denominator (bottom) by common factors until it can't be simplified
improper fraction to mixed number
divide the numerator by the denominator the answer on top is the whole number, the remainder is the numerator, the original denominator stays the same
mixed number to improper fraction
numerator = whole number x denominator (bottom) + numerator (top) denominator stays the same
