OUTLIER

A number (or value) that is far removed or stands alone from a group. It can affect the mean and median.

How do you find the mean?

Add all numbers in a set of data and then divide the sum by the number of items. Example: 4+2+3+3= 12 12 divided by 4= 3, so 3 is the mean.

MEAN

Add the numbers and divide by the number of numbers you added to find mean. It is often called the average.

The mean is generally the best way to look at the center of the data, unless there is a _________________________.

Outlier

What is "mean"?

You are finding the average. Add the numbers and divide by the number of numbers you added.

What is "median"?

You are finding the middle data value numbered ordered set of data. PUT THE NUMBERS IN ORDER FROM LEAST TO GREATEST!! If there are an odd number of numbers, it is the middle number. If there are an even number of numbers, average the two middle numbers and that is the median.

Which are measurements of the center or central tendency?

mean, median and mode

If there is an outlier, then the __________________________ is probably the best way to look at the center of the data.

median

If one number shows up much more often in the data, it may be the best way to look at the center of the data. What is that measurement called?

mode

What is the "mode"?

the number that repeats the most in a set of data. There can be more than one mode or no mode at all.

How do you find the median?

List all the numbers from least to greatest, and then cross out numbers until one in the middle is left. Example: 4 5 6 8 9 6 is the median. If there are two numbers left in the middle, add them, then divide by 2. This is the median.

How do you find the range?

Put all the numbers from least to greatest and subtract the smallest number from the greatest. Example: 1 2 3 4 5 6 6 - 1 = 5, so 5 is the range.

RANGE

Subtract the lowest number from the highest. It tells you what the spread of the data is.

MEDIAN

The number in the middle.

MODE

The number you see the MOST often. There can be more than one mode or no mode at all.

What is the "range"?

the difference between the largest and smallest number in a set of data.

How do you find the mode?

Find the number that repeats the most in a set of data. Example: 1 2 3 4 4 5 6 4 repeats the most so 4 is the mode.
