He gets his knowledge about nature from the old man and his books. He knows about the dragons because he has had dreams about them.

Why has Vortigern fled to the valley where Emrys live? Why does he want to have Emrys killed?
Vortigern has come to the valley because he has declared himself high king over all of Britain but the country has revolted and Vortigern has had to flee. He wants to build his battle tower on the jagged mountain peak. He thinks he must kill Emrys in order for his tower to stand.
