A comparison without using like or as

At five o'clock, the road is always a parking lot.

A lot of people are driving on the road at this time, but there are so many cars it is taking a long time and cars are oftentimes stopped.

Max is a pig when he eats.

Describing that Max does not use manners when he eats-he is sloppy.

His heart is a rock.

He does not have any emotions or feelings.

He is a night owl

He likes to stay up late.

The park was a lake after the rain.

It had rained so much that the park was under a lot of water.

Mary's eyes were fireflies.

Mary's eyes were bright and appeared to sparkle.

Implied metaphors

Metaphors that do not specifically say what is being compared. Instead, they describe one item with the words you would typically use to describe another.

My big brother is a couch potato.

My brother does not do a lot, he is lazy.

My teacher is a dragon.

My teacher is not very nice.

Her angry words were bullets to him.

She hurt his feelings by saying mean things, using mean words and phrases.

The classroom was a zoo.

The classroom seemed to be chaotic and out of control.

The clouds are balls of cotton.

The clouds look like balls of cotton, soft and fluffy.

The lawn is a green carpet.

The grass on the lawn is green and we walk on it like we do carpeting.

My kid's room is a disaster area.

The kid's room is a mess!

The kids were monkeys on the jungle gym.

The kids were playing and having a lot of fun on the jungle gym. They were climbing all over the equipment.

The calm lake was a mirror.

The lake water was not moving and it reflected everything around it.

The computers at school are old dinosaurs.

The school computers are really old.

The snow is a white blanket.

The white snow covers the ground and makes one feel comforted, like a blanket sometimes does.

Your brain is a computer.

Your brain can work really well-t can analyze, focus, and figure out problems.
