Ethnocentrism

Write a two paragraph reflection of what you learned that is important for social workers regarding family structure, cultural variations, language, customs and beliefs.

Ethnocentrism is the practice of judging another culture by the standards of one's own culture. We think that our way of living is normal, and others isn't, but they think the same thing about us. After reading this chapter, I learned how extremely different we are from other cultures and religions. I never knew that in Islamic cultures, physical contact between people of opposite sex was forbidden, we shake each other's hands and that's a sign of a greet. I also did not know that prolonged eye contact was considered impolite in African and Asian cultures, to us that's correct and polite. Never assume and stereotype anyone from another culture. When speaking to people of different cultures, speak clearly, a little slower and at a normal volume. In hospital areas, I thought that the food depended on just the health, I never would have thought it had anything to do with cultural beliefs. It is said in the Standards and Indicators for Cultural Competence, "Social workers should have a knowledge base of their clients' cultures and be able to demonstrate competence in the provision of services that are sensitive to clients' cultures and to differences among people and cultural groups."

Describe one program that assists Mississippians in poverty (name of program, eligibility and services provided).

Food Stamps, also known as Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), is a federal nutritional program that provides assistance to lower income families. There are three federal tests that each household must pass in order to be eligible for food stamps, however, some forms of eligibility can vary from state to state. The three tests are mostly based on income and assets. SNAP counts any cash that is received, before taxes, both earned and unearned, as income. SNAP counts anything that can aid the household as assets, however, most states relax asset standards by not including cars and homes. The three tests include results based on gross monthly income, net income, and assets. When considering gross income, a household must meet or be below 130 percent of the poverty line; the poverty line is set higher for bigger families and lower for smaller families. Net income is known as the household income that is brought in before any taxes are taken out. This income must be below the poverty line. Assets must fall below a certain limit based on the age of individuals and individuals in the household. The lower the income and asset value, the higher the amount of benefits a household will receive. The maximum benefits a family of three will get is $740. The bigger the household, the higher the benefit amount will go. If the gross and net income of a household is equal to or lower than the poverty line, and the asset value of a household is lower than the set amount, the household will be eligible for food stamps, or SNAP.
