Adele Davis and Linus Pauling
Adele Davis and vitamin C researcher Linus Pauling, helped bring fresh respectability to the idea that nature still held healing powers. This new breed was quick to adopt the research techniques of "conventional" medicine to prove the effectiveness of age-old remedies like herbs and newer options such as vitamin pills. Placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trials, in which neither the doctor nor the patient knew who was getting genuine treatment and who was getting a fake, soon became common not only for drugs, but for diet as well. As the results accumulated, it became clear that our choice of food could indeed have significant impact on our health.
Benedict Lust
Benedict Lust, a German doctor who emigrated to the U.S. in 1892, founded the health food store as we know it, and crystallized the focus of naturopathy on diet and nutrition as the chief route to health

Homeopathic medicine
Homeopathic medicine is a natural pharmaceutical science that uses various plants, minerals or animals in very small doses to stimulate the sick person's natural defenses. The physiologic mechanism of homeopathy is not completely understood, but is classified as energetic by nature (as is acupuncture). The basic principle of homeopathy, the "law of similars", holds that a substance which when used in a large dose produces a set of symptoms in a healthy person will cure the same set of symptoms in a sick person when used in a small dose

Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic Medicine grew out of the eclectic healing systems of the 18th and 19th centuries. Its philosophy was first used in the Hippocratic School of Medicine of about 400 B.C.. Physicians in the time of Hippocrates believed that they should try to understand as much as possible about the laws of nature, and apply it to their practice in a practical way. They looked for the "cause" of disease. They often used the term "Vis Medicatrix Naturae", c," to note the body's ability to heal itself. "Naturopathy" or "Nature Cure" is viewed by some as a way of life as well as a concept of healing that employs various natural means of preventing and treating human disease. Some of the earliest therapies used Hygienics and Hydrotherapy. The Eclectics that were the forefathers of modern "Naturopathic Medicine" tended to use any means to help their patients as long as it didn't harm them
Naturopathic Principles
Naturopathic Principles 1. Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle causam) The naturopathic doctor seeks to identify and to remove the underlying causes of illness, rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms. 2. First Do No Harm (Primum non nocere) Naturopathic doctors follow these three guidelines to avoid harming the patient: -Use methods and medicines which minimize the risk of harmful side effects, using the least force necessary to diagnose and treat. -Avoid, when possible, the harmful suppressing of symptoms. -Acknowledge, respect and work with the individual's self-healing process. Naturopathic doctors act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate and increase this inherent self-healing process.

The Flexner report of 1910
The Flexner report of 1910. This report had a devastating effect on the availability of education to people who wanted to pursue naturopathic and homeopathic approaches. This document, written by Abraham Flexner in conjunction with the AMA, was an evaluation of American Medical schools. It established guidelines meant to sanction allopathic medicine and condemn homeopathic and naturopathic colleges. It also had a significant impact on black medical schools: only two of the seven existing schools at the time survived. This report also declared that all medical schools had to have academic departments of research encouraging the pursuit of the physical sciences and new medical approaches. Healing approaches that favored empirical testing of natural products, lifestyle changes that were difficult to test in laboratories, and approaches based on caring and support were marginalized. Fifteen years after the Flexner report, alternative practitioners only cared for 5 percent of the illness in the United States, down from a peak of 20 percent.

Nature Cure
The term "Nature Cure" itself was coined in 1895 by Dr. John Scheel of ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />New York City to describe his own method of health care. Dr. Benedict Lust whose teachings initiated naturopathy in the U.S. began using the term Naturopathy in 1902 to name the Eclectic compilation of doctrines of natural healing that he envisioned as the future scope of natural medicine. They used such things as nutritional therapy, natural diet, herbal medicine, homeopathy, spinal manipulation, exercise therapy, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, and stress reduction.
Botanical Medicine
The use of plants and fungi with medicinal properties in the treatment of illness. Plants are applied in many different forms such as tinctures, infusions, decoctions, capsules, poultices, essential oils, solid extracts, creams, salves, and standardized extracts. Naturopathic physicians are the only licensed physicians in the United States who are specifically trained in the medical use of medicinal herbs. Botanical medicines are one of the main therapeutic modalities used by naturopathic physicians in treating illness and in helping to maintain and optimize health. Naturopaths incorporate traditional information regarding herbs as well as the latest scientific information.
Thomas Edison
Thomas Edison is quoted as saying "the doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patient in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause of prevention of disease."

Conclusion
• Naturopathic Doctors are eclectic in their approach, using a variety of natural healing modalities. The use of non-toxic, non-invasive therapeutics enables them to treat their patients according to the Hippocratic principle, "First do no harm". • Naturopaths act as teachers, educating patients and inspiring healthful lifestyle practices. Involving their patients to engage in their healing process is key to successful outcomes
