Networking Concepts: Types Of Networks
WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network)
A self-contained network of two or more computers connected using a wireless connection.
Virtual LAN (VLAN)
A virtual network that is implemented to segment the network, reduce collisions, organize the network, boost performance, and, hopefully, increase security.
VPN (Virtual Private Network)
Encrypted connection over the Internet between a computer or remote network and a private network.
Wireless Mesh Network (WMN)
Use multiple access points to extend the WLAN. Business and municipalities can use this to quickly add new areas of coverage.
Personal Area Network (PAN)
a network that connects devices, such as mice, keyboards, printers, smartphones, and tablets within the range of an individual person. All of these devices are dedicated to a single host and are most often connected with Bluetooth technology.
WAN (Wide Area Network)
connects multiple networks that are in geographically separated locations. Individuals and organizations contract service providers for access.
Local Area Network (LAN)
defined as a network that encompasses a small geographical area. However, the distinguishing characteristic, they are typically owned by an individual, such as in a home or small business, or wholly managed by an IT department, such as in a school or corporation.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
network that spans a metropolitan area, usually a city and its major suburbs. Its geographic scope falls between a WAN and a LAN.
