What is a Concrete Noun?

A tangible entity like a house, pencil, mom.

What is an open lexical category?

nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Also called form classes, main parts of speech, or content categories.

What is a Proper noun?

A very specific entity like The White House, Bowie State University.

a phrase that is formed when nouns team up with other parts of speech like determiners, adjectives, etc. NPs usually fill the subject space.

What is a closed lexical category?

determiners, prepositions, conjunctions, pronouns, interjections, and particles. Also called function classes or minor parts of speech.

What is an object of a preposition?

nouns or pronouns that follow a preposition in a sentence. Example: The cost of THE WATCH was expensive.

What are some examples of Noun Morphological Frames?

plural(-s), possessive('s), -er/or (one who), -ion, and -ness.

What is Morphological Frame?

refers to the form of a noun and other open lexical categories including prefixes and suffixes and their meanings.

What are some examples of Syntactic Frames for Nouns?

the/a/an, any verb object, subject verb, and prepositions.

What is a subject?

who or what the sentence is about. Example: THE CLOCK is ticking.

What is an indirect object?

who or whatever is receiving the direct object. Example: He gave HIS BROTHER the watch.

What are gerunds?

words that end in -ing that are typically occupied by nouns like "Walking a mile is everyday is healthy."

What is a determinant?

words that precede a noun such as articles, numbers, possessive pronouns, etc.

What is an Abstract noun?

A nontangible entity like ideas, thoughts, emotions, intelligence.

What is a Common noun?

A general state of things in a broad category like cat, house, professor.

A noun is one of the main four parts of speech that carries meaning. It tells us "who" or "what" in a sentence.

a head or the main word.

What is an appositive?

a noun phrase that comes after another noun phrase providing more information about the preceding noun phrase. Example: The watch, a Rolex, cost a lot of money.

What is an Object compliment?

a word (usually a noun or an adjective) that renames the direct object or states what it has become. Example: I can make Ashley available.

What is a direct object?

a word or that receives the action of the verb. Example: He took THE PHONE with him.

What is an adjective?

a word that modifies a noun or pronoun. Example: The teacher shared some IMPORTANT news.
