imagine the CB as a triangle

Base anteriorly; connects zonules to lens -- most by the sclera spur Midpoint = the iris root Apex posteriorly; ora serrata- where the anterior part of retina ends and ciliary ends

What is the ciliary sulcus?

Indentation behind the iris and in front of the ciliary process

Par plicata

Corrugated, folds on surface, ridges --contains ciliary process thus wider

What term is used to identify retinal tissues invaginations to the ciliary body

Dentate process --in pars plana

Ciliary processes

Finger-like Non-pigmented (INNER) encases the pigmented (OUTER)

Pars plana

Flat, runs posteriorly -- Contains finger-like projections = oral bay -- The scallop edge space formed; retinal indentation= Dentate processes

What does the outer part of the ciliary abut to?

Innermost part of sclera; lamina fusca

What are the regions between the processes called?

Valley of kuhat

Are the ciliary processes plicated?

Yes

Is the par plana avasular?

Yes

Are eye injections performed at the pars plana?

Yes, 3-4 behind the limbus

Are the stromal capillaries in the CB FENESTRATED?

Yes, large and fenestrated; very leaky --more so in ciliary process

What makes up the ciliary stroma?

-- Loose connective tissue between the muscle and the epithelial layers Ant. - continuous w/ iris stroma Post. - Thins are pars plana and becomes continuous w/ chorodial stroma -- Major arterial circle is here

What is the vascular supply to the CB?

-- Major circle of iris in stroma of CB -- Anastomosis of LPCA anf Ant. ciliary artery -- Vortex; venous returns blood

What is the ora serrata?

-- Most anterior part of the retina where the ciliary body ends and retina begins

What are the functions in CB?

1. Accommodation 2. Aqueous production 3. Zonule production 4. Viterous production

Where are the 3 layers of the ciliary muscle

1. Longitudinal (most superficial) --Adj to supraciliaris, parallel to sclera -- Tendon of origin inserts into spur and TM -- V, base at spur and apex are choroid 2. Radial -- Beneath longitudinal --Wider V -- Origin at spur, transition to circular fibers 3. Circular/ Muller's annular -- Innermost -- Sphincter-like Accommodation- release tension on the zonules, len bulges

What are the 4 layers of the CB?

1. Supracillaris (closer to sclera) 2. Ciliary muscles --Longitudinal, radial, circular 3. Ciliary stroma -- Continuously w/ iris stroma -- contains melanocytes, fibroblast, collagen, extracelluar matrix --LEAKY 4. 2 layers of epithelium Outer- Pigmented ciliary (closer to stroma); from AIE Inner- Non-pigmented epithelium; continuous w/ PIE ***Contains tight junctions= 2nd BLOOD EYE BARRIER

How many ciliary processes are there?

70-80

What is the near triad?

Accommodation, convergence, pupil constriction

What is the ciliary body continuous w/?

Choroid

What structures have a golf-club shape?

Ciliary processes

What is the ciliary body a continuation of?

Iris

How does the iris connect to the ciliary body?

Iris connects to the ciliary body at the iris root

Is the pars plicata avascular?

NO, highly vascular

Describe the ciliary epithelium

Outer (next to stroma) -- Pigmented, cubodial -- Gap junctions (leaky), continuous w/ AIE and RPE Inner (next to PC) -- Nonpigmented, columnar in pars plana and cuboidal in pars plicata -- Tight junctions, BLOOD EYE BARRIER -- Continuous w/ PIE and sensory retina

What are the 2 portions of the ciliary body?

Pars plicata; anterior 1/3 pars plana; posterior 2/3

What layer of the CB epithelium secrete aqueous humor?

Posterior Inner

What makes up the ciliary processes?

Stroma makes up the core -- highly vascularized

What is the nerve supply to CB?

V1: Nasociliary branch Sympathetic; LPCN --> blood vessels = constriction Parasympathetic; SPCN--> ciliary muscle (accommodation)
