Irregular - Plural nouns: Old Plural Forms

A few nouns use old plural forms, changing vowels or adding -en instead of forming their plurals in the regular way. Example: Man = Men

Irregular - Plural nouns: Do not change Some nouns ending in s have the same form whether singular or plural.

Example: Headquaters = headquarters

Nouns that end with -Y, (after a consonant)

Kennedy + s = Kennedys To form the plural of most nouns ending in y after a consonant

Regular plurals are formed by

adding s or es to the singular form of the noun

Irregular - Plural nouns

are plural noun forms that do not add -s or -es. Instead, these nouns form their plurals in a variety of ways.

nouns end with -o, (after vowel)

cameo + s = cameos patio + s = patios rodeo + s = rodeos To form the plural of most nouns ending in o after a vowel, simply add s.

If you are unsure of how to form a plural,

check a dictionary! Irregular plurals are usually listed after the entry word and pronunciation for the singular noun.

nouns that add just -es, (nouns ending in ch, s, sh, x, or z)

church + es = churches Jones + es = Joneses dish + es = dishes box + es = boxes waltz + es = waltzes To form the plural of nouns ending in ch, s, sh, x, or z, add es.

Nouns that end with -Y, (after a vowel)

donkey + s = donkeys guy + s = guys journey + s = journeys To form the plural of most nouns ending in y after a vowel, simply add s.

nouns end with -o, (after consonant)

echo + es = echoes hero + es = heroes tomato + es = tomatoes To form the plural of most nouns ending in o after a consonant, add es.

Changing -Y to -ies

family + es = families fly + es = flies change the y to i and add es.

Nouns that add just -s, (most nouns)

home + s = homes sister + s = sisters Smith + s = Smiths To form the plural of most nouns, simply add s.

Nouns ending in -fe

knife + s = knives life + s = lives wife + s = wives change the f to v and add s.

nouns ending in -lf and -eaf

leaf + es = leaves thief + es = thieves wolf + es = wolves change the f to v and add es.
