GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)

- Regurgitation of gastric contents into esophagus - Burns esophageal mucosa - Acid reflux - Pyrosis - Common during pregnancy - >40 y/o

Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD)

- ulcer in the lower portion of esophagus, stomach, and/or duodenum - caused by high acid of stomach juices; - may be a result of Helicobacter pylori infection

Mylanta

Class: Antacid. Neutralizes stomach acid; aluminum and magnesium based. Side Effect: Constipation (aluminum) & Diarrhea (magnesium).

The nurse is caring for a client who is receiving antacids to relieve GI discomfort. What nursing action is most appropriate?
