GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)

Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD)
- ulcer in the lower portion of esophagus, stomach, and/or duodenum - caused by high acid of stomach juices; - may be a result of Helicobacter pylori infection
Mylanta
Class: Antacid. Neutralizes stomach acid; aluminum and magnesium based. Side Effect: Constipation (aluminum) & Diarrhea (magnesium).

Central nervous depressant THESE MEDS DO NOT COAT STOMACH side effects: constipation or diarrhea or acid rebound effect nursing considerations: Interferes with absorption of antibiotics, iron preps, INH, ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES (antibiotics also effects contraceptives!!!) Monitor bowel function may cause bowel addiction timing: 1-2 hr AFTER eating and other medications Fluid and electrolyte balances extremely important monitor S&S of labs shifting
