1. Intestinal candidiasis can be treated with the oral medication ___________________.
Nystatin (generic)
Lamotrogine (Lamictal)
Uses Lamotrigine is used alone or with other medications to prevent and control seizures. It may also be used to help prevent the extreme mood swings of bipolar disorder in adults. Lamotrigine is known as an anticonvulsant or antiepileptic drug. It is thought to work by restoring the balance of certain natural substances in the brain. This drug is not approved for use in children younger than 2 years due to an increased risk of side effects (such as infections). "Many clinicians think that lamotrigine helps achieve and sustain even moods over time by virtue of its antidepressant properties, rather than anti-manic (mood-stabilizing) properties,."It works with mood stabilizers like lithium and Divalproex, but it's not interchangeable with these drugs and cannot be used in their place."
Drug of choice for treatment of myoclonic seizures and stabilizes labile moods.

CASE STUDY chapter 10. The nurse working in a public health department has assessed patients with various viral infections. A. Describe characteristics of common viruses. B. Describe the clinical presentations of common viral infections.
2.a A virus cannot replicate on its own. It must attach to and enter a host cell. It then uses the host cell's energy to synthesize protein, DNA, and RNA. Viruses are difficult to kill because they live inside our cells. Any drug that kills a virus may also kill our cells. 2b. MAO inhibitors (MAOIs)
Class of drugs that inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO), thereby causing an accumulation of catecholamines and serotonin in the brain. They are often used to treat clinical depression. Depression found self destructive amines that dont make it to the next neuron, so it helps to get it across the synapse.
Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)
Drugs that inhibit the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin by the presynaptic neurons in the central nervous system, increasing the amount of time they are available to the postsynaptic receptors. Muscarinic blockage leads to anticholinergic effects such as blurred vision, dry mouth, tachycardia, urinary retention, and constipation.

Lithium
Lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid) is one of the most widely used and studied medications for treating bipolar disorder. Lithium helps reduce the severity and frequency of mania. It may also help relieve or prevent bipolar depression. Studies show that lithium can significantly reduce suicide risk. Lithium also helps prevent future manic and depressive episodes. As a result, it may be prescribed for long periods of time (even between episodes) as maintenance therapy. Lithium acts on a person's central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). Doctors don't know exactly how lithium works to stabilize a person's mood, but it is thought to help strengthen nerve cell connections in brain regions that are involved in regulating mood, thinking and behavior.
1. Common side effects of topical antifungals include _______________, ________________, ____________________, and _________________.
Local irritation, burning, rash, swelling
Suicide risk and antidepressants
Most antidepressants are generally safe, but the FDA requires that all antidepressants carry black box warnings, the strictest warnings for prescriptions. In some cases, children, teenagers and young adults under 25 may have an increase in suicidal thoughts or behavior when taking antidepressants, especially in the first few weeks after starting or when the dose is changed. Anyone taking an antidepressant should be watched closely for worsening depression or unusual behavior. If you or someone you know has suicidal thoughts when taking an antidepressant, immediately contact your doctor or get emergency help.

How SNRIs work
SNRIs ease depression by affecting chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) used to communicate between brain cells. Like most antidepressants, SNRIs work by ultimately effecting changes in brain chemistry and communication in brain nerve cell circuitry known to regulate mood, to help relieve depression. SNRIs block the reabsorption (reuptake) of the neurotransmitters serotonin (ser-o-TOE-nin) and norepinephrine (nor-ep-ih-NEF-rin) in the brain.

SSRI's Increase suicidal ideation Depression is a mood disorder Have a person checking in until it works 4-6 weeks around 2 weeks have energy to kill themselves Not an overnight transition Assess emotional support system to establish that its adequate Risk for Seratonin Syndrome
SSRIS and bleeding
SSRIs may increase your risk of bleeding, especially when you're taking other medications that increase the risk of bleeding, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), aspirin, warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven) and other blood thinners.
SSRIS info
SSRIs treat depression by increasing levels of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is one of the chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) that carry signals between brain nerve cells (neurons). SSRIs block the reabsorption (reuptake) of serotonin into neurons. This makes more serotonin available to improve transmission of messages between neurons. SSRIs are called selective because they mainly affect serotonin, not other neurotransmitters. SSRIs may also be used to treat conditions other than depression, such as anxiety disorders.

CASE STUDY chapter 10. John is a 28-year-old male who was diagnosed with a viral gastrointestinal infection. Discuss problems with treating viral infections in humans. John asks why the health care provider did not order him a medication for his virus. How would you respond?
· Because viruses are contained inside human cells while they are in the body, researchers have difficulty developing effective drugs that destroy a virus without harming the human host. 1b. Students' answers should include the following: · Some drugs that are used in treating viral infections are not natural substances and have been effective against only a limited number of viruses. Viruses that respond to some antiviral therapy include influenza A and some respiratory viruses, herpes viruses, cytomegalovirus (CMV), the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and some viruses that cause warts and certain eye infections.
